Hi!

A question regarding TV picture quality. Not an expert in this at all but i guess it has to do with interlacing or the like.

Depending on what kind of codec i use for watching dvb-t i either have good picture quality
attachment.php

but artefacts during movements
attachment.php

OR rather "blocky" picture (looks like lower resolution)
attachment.php

but no movement artefacts.

Any chance to have a good quality and no artefacts ?? Or is it an error in the "system" (broadcasting two half pictures) ?

cheers,
Mirko

The middle is interlacing indeed. The lower looks like a dirty quick way of deinterlacing. I'd say, experiment with the different deinterlacing options (from my head, MPV has a seperate deinterlacing options in its decoding settings) and/or different codecs.

The top looks ok since you see both fields at the same time, and since theres no movement (letters) the image is very sharp. However, when theres movement and you get to see both fields you will get the interlaced effect as seen on the second image.

Unfortunally, the PC doesnt work with fields, so we have to discard one to get rid of that effect. Naturally, this also means we are loosing image detail. If done too quick and rudimentary, the third image might be a result of that.

So experimentation with the different settings, and possibly other (or new) codecs is the only way to go. Better deinterlacing methods might require more CPU so its all very dependant on what system you use.

Thanks for your hints so far, guys....!

My graphics card is a Gigabyte 128 MB AGP with nVidia 6800 chipset....but tried a 5200 as well, does not make a difference. System is newly set up, but had it with my old one as well.

The first picture (good quality) and the one with the movement artefacts was produced using nvidia purevideo codecs (i think either "video" or "movie" setting). The other one (bad quality but no movement artefacts) was produced using DScaler. However, I can produce the same "blocky" image quality by changing to another setting in the nvidia puretec codec.

Changing the deinterlace mode inside mediaportal setup does not make a difference for me, whether I use codec A or B.

cheers,

If you set in MP deinterlace to None and In Nvidia codec to smart you have the same results ?

Tried it out just now...but yes...looks the same. If I set purevideo codec to "Film" (german version) then quality is ok again but again with artefacts, with "smart" the picture is "blocky". :)

Did you set deinterlacing in MyTV to "none"? If not, try it. ;-)

You mean in the Mediaportal Setup - TV or within Mediaportal: Settings, MyTV...
Yes, that's what i did....unfortunately no effect.

I have the same "problem". "Smart" gives the best deinterlaced picture for me, but a little blurry. "Film" gives very clear picture, but interlace-artifacts in movements. Are there any TV-cards that have line doubler? Maybe thats whats needed?
