Hi

I often see mention of TVEngine3 here on the MediaPortal website. From what i understand, it's a nw version of, well, the TV Engine. But apart from that (possibly incorrect understanding) i know nothing else about it. Like what are the differences between it and what comes as standard in the normal MediaPortal 0.2.3.0 (stable version, not the SVNs)? Is it compatible with MP 0.2.3.0 or is it to be used in MP 2?

I hope someone can help clarify this for me as i'm abit confused.

    Hi Salem,

There is a lot to be said about the differences between TV2 (integrated with MP) and TV3E (stand-alone). Here are a couple of major ones (from my perspective):

    - TV3E supports HDTV, TV2E does not

    - TV3E supports multiple MP clients to connect to the same TV server, i.e. you can have one machine with all TV-cards and your other PCs connecting to it

    - New plugins, like TVScheduler, is developed for TV3E, rarely for TV2E

    - In MP 0.2.3.0 you can use either or, in the longer perspective there is probably something like TV3E that will persist

    - TV3E is slightly more cumbersome to setup since you need to install MS SQL or MySQL, but once it has been setup there is no difference.

Other members of the community can add more but for me these are the main points.

    Hope this helps!

    /Peter

    Hi Salem

The Wiki gives a comparison table here TV-Engine 0.3/overview - MediaPortal Wiki Documentation that shows the differences between the built in TV Engine (described as MediaPortal 0.2) and TV Engine 3 (described as TV-Server/Client).

I believe that development has stopped on TV Engine 2 so any new features will only appear on TV Engine 3. I also assume that MediaPortal 2 will not have a native TV Engine but will use TV Engine 3 via a plugin (similar to when you install TV Engine 3 on MediaPortal 0.2.3).

Different people have had different experiences of TV Engine 3. I have been using it on a single seat set up in a stand alone HTPC for about a year without major issues. I have an advantage that it was brand new hardware last April and it is a dedicated HTPC under the TV.

Thanks guys. That infor has helped. Especially the table "Mew" recommended.

So, TVEngine 3 can be used with MediaPortal 0.2.3.0, but also needs the TV Server (which in turn needs an SQL database of some sort)?

I like the fact that TVE3 supports DVB Subtitles (which MediaPortal 0.2 doesn't). I'd really like this feature, but don't really want to have to install TV Server and have an SQL Database just for that.

Not to mension that Mp with the TVServer and client plugin is far more relaible than play MP ever was.

    (at least in my experience)
