This is a qoute from the TVServer documention:

"If a tvserver enters standby, any remote MediaPortal client connected to it will freeze. This is because the Remoting interface cannot restore the connection to the server and MediaPortal will indefinitely wait for this. This is why a client/server setup is not supported currently."

This should not be a problem at all if "wake on lan" is set in the server. I always access my video files on my other computer while it is asleep, simply by clicking on a library on my local computer, and the remote PC wakes up (without waking up its display).

    Hi Doron,

The fact that the MP client freezes has nothing todo with wake-on-lan actually. The way the MediaPortal client communicates with the tvservice would keep the tvserver awake indefinitely (since it's constantly updating several statuses like the rec-icon), unless you only allow the server to wakeup for true wake-on-lan "magic" packets.

Have you actually tried this? I mean, if I have to stop MP on a client in order for the tvserver to be able to enter suspend that would be useless, IMHO. I want the tvserver to suspend when for example the client is just listening to music.

    Kind regards,
    Michel

Well scoop I had to realize what I wrote was too obvious... sorry.

What do you exactly mean if I tried? Waking up the TVServer by activating the MediaPortal client?

Unfortuanatly I cannot try almost anything regarding the TVServer in the next few days since my old ATI 8500 card does not work with it, and my new hauppauge 150 is currently doing its way to my house on the mail.

I did do the following expriment of watching movies without MediaPortal:
    1. Put the "server" to sleep. (s3 mode).
    2. Open the "server" video folder on a "client" ==>The "server" woke up.
    3. On the "client", start playing a movie from the "server"'s folder.
    4. Put the "server" to sleep ==> The server looks as if it is getting into sleep mode but it instantly wakes up. The movie keeps playing on the client with no problem.

just one thing: I have lotsa experience with Wake on Lan, because for already a very long time I have my server in the basement and lotsa clients upstairs (even before using Mediaportal). One thing I learned: if you really want to be in control for which events your server should wake up, you have to use the magic-packet WOL. Simple wake on lan based on network activity is a pain in the ***. It will wake up the server for many other activities too (e.g. just when you add a network drive etc) even when you don't want it. So it is really needed to make use of the magic-packet thing. Then, your system will ONLY wake up when you send the magic packet. And that is what I do all the time (from my WLAN PocketPC which I use as remote control for my server).
A simple "Send Magic Packet" Button somewhere in the client GUI would be perfect :)

There is one HUGE problem when using WOL along with a file/TV-Server
    1. server is in S3orS4
    2. start your client
    3. enter MediaPortal
    4. wake up the server with a WOL Feature (which is not implemented yet)
    5. server is online
    6. now you have a problem, since you will use Networkshares to access the data on the server, they appear to "not connected" because the server was sleeping at the moment you started your client

    you could:
    1. close mediaportal
    2. enter Windows Explorer
    3. select every networkshare
    4. which "activates/connects" it then
    5. start MediaPortal
    6. now shares can be access

i have no clue if that could be done automatically by MediaPortal somehow.

I wrote a little .bat file that connects the shares on startup for the HTPC. Well, that's at least "half-automatic" ;)

IIRC it was some command like "net ...", but I'd need to look at it on the HTPC if you're interested.

you would have to run that everytime after the Server resumes from S3/S4 then.
problem is that you would have to created that bat file maualy then, because i think it would be quite hard for MP to find out your Networshares and then re.connect them, or?

Sure you have to do this. This was just meant as a suggestion towards your "click once on every network share"...

From testing because of oddities with my TV service stopping for no reason, all my clients will reconnect without restarting when the server and TV service is stoped or even the server is rebooted.

What needs to be defined or even user selectable is the 'timeout' period for the client when the server/tv-service is unavaiable and whether to try reconnection and/or send magic packet (if the server is off-line)

Magic packet would be ideal and could be automated within the MP client logic or an added GUI button
