After clean install of RC2, I am no longer able to play DivX files in MyVideos. Nothing happens when I select a file and the errorlog shows something about access violation of restricted memory. Logs attached

    Hi,
Can't confirm this with using .avi's, will try to download some other files to see if anything shows.
The error indicates a codecs issue, btw.

    Regards

Thanks, I think you are right. I discovered that Windows MediaPlayer crashes everytime I try to play an .avi-file. I downloaded the latest Xvid decoder and configured that as a post processing filter in MyVideos. Now it works for most files. Some still don't work, but at least that confirms it is a codec problem, not an MP bug. However, all files that don't play in MP play fine in VLC, so there is some configuration glitch. Why must this codec stuff be so hard?:( Windows MediaPlayer still crashes by the way...

    Hi,
VLC uses own codecs & doesn't use directx & VMR9 which MP renders on so it's not comparable, but as a said i'll try to get another avi's like the one you have & see.

I downloaded the latest Xvid decoder and configured that as a post processing filter in MyVideos.
now that is quite a biog misstake.

if you add something in post processing, then this only causes higher CPU-load.

playing divx/xvid files works just fine here. (heaviely used by wife and daugther every day ;) )

    i suggest:
    1. uninstall x-vid codec
    2. uninstall divx-codec
    3. download latest version of xvid
    4. download latest version of divx
    5. install xvid
    6. install divx

    :D

Thanks Infinityloop, but now I'm really confused! Removed the post filter config as you suggested and the problem re-appeared. Put the filter back on and the problem remained!

Uninstalled Xvid and also an older version of FFDShow, which has stuck around through several MP upgrades. No need to uninstall DivX, since I've never installed it.

Before installing new versions of DivX and Xvid, I decoded to try a file just for the hell of it. It ran!

Checked with Graphedit and one of the files showed up using Pinnacle(dicas) MPEG-4 Decoder, which I guess comes from the Pinnacle MediaManager software I have installed.

Ran one of the other problematic files and it showed up using Divx Decoder Filter! I have no idea where that came from.

Oh well, I guess I'll never fully understand this codec stuff. But everything seems to work now so I'm happy.:D

thats the "beauty" of merits :p

every filter registers in WindowsXP with an merit setting. based on this merit, windows decidecs which filter to use.
i.e. if you have ffdshow installed and divx and then play a video, then windows uses the coder/filter with the higher merit setting -> "intelligent connect".

many times it chooses the "wrong" filter. especialy occurs if you have filters on your system you are not even aware of (the Pinnacle on in your case).
then you can either "fix" that by removing the not needed codecs/filters, or set the merit settings to fit your needs.

thats all kown as "Merit Hell" ;)
