Guys, there is something (or better: quite a lot ;)) that I don't understand about this mambo jambo of codecs: I'm trying out MCE buddy to compress my recordings so I needed a codec to be able to watch h.264.
After installing SAF4, the configuration in the 'codecs and renderer' screen has changed and for 'MPEG / AC3 audio decoder' I can only select ffdshow audio decoder.
Those compressed (h.264) files are playing well but now when I want to play my normal recordings I get this message:
    'unable to play...
video codec: MPEG VIDEO VERSION 2
audio codec: MPEG AUDIO VERSION 1 LAYE...'

I have configured installed and configured SAF4 as in the installation instructions for the video codecs and tv codecs tab - I guess for this situation the video codecs tab is what counts, right?
If I select ffdshow video & audio decoder for MPEG, I still get the same message.

Shoudn't ffdshow not be able to play MPEG2 files or am I completely wrong?

    Hi,

Just tried graphstudio and get a 'Cannot render file' message but currently I have uninstalled SAF - don't know if that matters.

I was wondering if SAF5 would be a solution and had already seen your remark about the PM but also wanted to get to understand this codec thing a little bit more.

if you were willing to install Win7, it has a great mpeg2 codec built-in to the OS
