Using remote control to type in keyboards (1 Viewer)

I'm not sure if this is something that is easily solved, but while trying to use the cumbersome on-screen keyboard with my MCE remote, I had an idea. If we could use the number pad to type in letters like you would on a cell phone, that would make entering text for search features (read: OnlineVideos) significantly easier. I know this functionality is already in place to select songs and video, so maybe it wouldn't be hard to transition the input to the on-screen keyboard?

I wish I knew how to do this, maybe someone could give me some tips as to where to start?
