    Hi
I have tested and done a lot of learning since I installed MP a month ago.
Several small problems. Some have been solved.

I have tried to search trough this forum for similar problem that I have. The search function isn't that good though. If it finds a hit you have to wade trough the hole thread ..

I have a fairly stock system with MP 1.0.2 and cannot get MP to choose the filters I want.

If I choose anything other then MPC codecs the volume and mute function is broken. But still, the FFDShow video codec is running all the time, even though MPC is choosen.
I can't get the ffdshow audio codec to run at all on any media, exept an MKV movie with starwars used without Core AVC video codec choosen for the h264 video.

If I use any PDVD codec for the video the audio codec doesn't work at all on onlinemovies, f.e. Youtube.

I have used graphstudio to check. It seems reliable (I hope for most of the time)

How the heck do you guys trim your settings when you never know which ones are loading or which combination will work? This is a nightmare and i presume most of the bugreports is about this in the first place.

it seems you have complex problems and your problems are not described clearly. Thats why I can give you general tipps and hints only. But any help is better than nothing :)

    - always check the built graph with Graphstudio (start MP, start playing file, check Graphstudio)
    - do not install too many codecs (direct show filters) and splitters (nero, haali etc)
    - my suggestion: clean OS reinstall, only ffdshow, Haali splitter and PowerDVD
    - do not forget to configure ffdshow audio and video (input format set all stable to libavcodec... or disable if you need)
    - configure codecs in MP (video codecs under video, dvd under dvd, live TV and for .ts files under TV, for online videos you cannot configure anything: system preferences will be chosen, keyword Merits)
    - edit your Merits with Radlight eg. you want to stop ffdshow video decoder from loading

unfortunately control of used ffdsow filters is confusing and a big problem of windows. Thats why try to keep it simple and do not install codec packs or video related software on your HTPC (like video editing programs, transcoders, Nero Recode/Showtime, alternative DVB-T/S software). Codecs can be hijacked very fast.

    Thanks kszabo
I have put more then 40 working hours in this "choosing codecs in MP and validating codecs with graphedit" and my description above is exact, allthough complex as you say :)

I regret that I tried ac3 filter and SPDIF (some versions with AC3 filter?) I also tried the SAF on this forum. I don't know if I uninstalled it the right way. I also installed the MPC HC codec as of Damasters guide here. And because I have a Bluray player I have PDVD 7 installed (followed the player). (Also PDVD9 *.ax as a hack from the trial version) I have also bought Core AVC v.1.9.5 because of the beautiful performance of my DTS h264 MKV files. Otherwise there is only FFDshow and Hali and the quicktimes filters for online videos (fe. apple HD trailers). Barbone decoders as of the few guides here.

To reinstall the OS and start all over is not an option right now. I have to live with these small problems at the time.

I know I have read about this problem elswhere here, not getting the codecs you choose in MP, but I can't find the threads right now. I know it's not just me who have this problem but I will try to find a way to a sollution. :)

Any tip is a valuable one thanks. :)

I agree with Radioman that codecs are really a pain in the a** and it seems almost impossible to get them work perfectly. Especially if you are like me, not very interested about technical details, just want to have a good quality picture. I put osd on from ffdshow and it seems that ffdshow is used (those green texts appear on the screen when watching video) regardless of what I choose from Mediaportal's settings. So should I just forget any other codecs and use ffdshow? That would be fine, ffdshow has given best picture quality so far, the only problem is that it doesn't always turn off after watching video (those icons stay in Windows notification area) and that prevents my computer to go automatically standby.

I'm starting to believe my wife who says that this project will never be completed... Maybe I should just go and by separate dvd player and digital receiver, watch photos with Wii and listen to music with Winamp. Just hoped that finally I would have working integrated system... I'm a little desparate at the moment, as you can see :)

You can disable those annoying icons in the config program for FFDShow :)
Start -> programs -> ffdshow audio config -> tray, dialog and paths - NONE
Start -> programs -> ffdshow video config -> tray, dialog and paths - NONE

Of course this is never going to be finished! It keeps getting better and better :)
as long as people want more and more stuff, the MP devs will keep amazing us with how brilliant this software is...

Yo see my specs in "My System" to the left. I use optical SPDIF directly to a Harman Kardon AVR3000 receiver. HDMI to TV for the picture.

Why do you control the volume and the mute from the HTPC and not the Harman Kardon AVR3000 receiver then? I use ffdshow and AC3filter, works perfectly as long as you got an external receiver.

Because I wont have to switch remote.
That problem is no big problem, even if it's a bug in MP or conflict with the latest FFDShow I think.
The real big problem is that I'm not able to choose what decoder I want. MP always choose FFDShow. I just uninstalled the FFDShow for testing and then, thanks God, MP switched to use MPC codec.

I will try to install an older FFDshow to check this up.

I suggest getting a harmony line remote, u can chose where to send the volume command to and what not.. Though the codec problem sounds more like a ffdshow problem than MP.
