Videos wont play in mp, but fine in wmp

hope you guys and girls can help, i seem to be having a nightmare with my second MP, yeah. i know

first one was a breeze, all installed, setup the tv server and also got my sat card to work. no problems.

had problems, so like any good noob, i browsed the forums to try and find any similar errors. no avail

however, i decided to build another one for my partner, installed windows xp pro 32, applied all patches, installed all the required components and codecs. however, my mp still wont play videos. it will say its unable to play the file as the codecs are missing for example xvid and mp3, however the videos will play fine in windows media player 11. any suggestions please?

What codec do you have installed?

You could try installing FFDSHOW just to make sure.
