What Causes Audio Sync Problems? (1 Viewer)

So I recently set up my HTPC with MediaPortal. First off, I'm extremely impressed with this software. The installation was smooth, and pretty much everything has worked very well and very intuitively. Even my girlfriend, who was hesitant about a HTPC setup, is finding it easy to use and loves it.

Problem is that sometimes video files I put on there are out of sync with the audio track. The audio is either a half-second to a second ahead- or behind-of the video. Sometimes it's not a big deal and you can deal with it. But when it's a full second or more out of sync, it makes it hard to enjoy the movie. If I play it on my regular PC, it's fine, but when I copy it to my HTPC and play it using MP, it gets out of sync. My questions are:

1. What causes this?

and

2. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

I try deleting the file and copying it back over, doesn't seem to make a difference. Some files just don't seem to like it. It doesn't do this for all videos, just some.

Audio\video sync is only controlled by 2 things, the relevant drivers (graphics\audio), or the codecs used, might be worthwhile reinstalling all and see if things improve.
