I don't think the order is that important, but since the client need to connect to the server, I would definitely do the server first. That is also the order mentioned on the TV Server wiki.

i myself will always follow this order with a new install:
    Server
    MP
    Client

I know for a fact that it will also work the same if you do MP before the server.

You can download the wiki. Look at this thread.

See there is no standard way of doing things.

Install any codecs required, ie powerdvd, nvidia, windvd and my chosen codecs for divx\xvid\mkv\H.264, codecs for video, can be a bit hit and miss, Goose does a good guide (downloadable, search name), i find that the Vista Codec Pack works fine for me, others like the cccp codec pack, all include the newer versions of ffdshow tryouts, and are updated frequently.

I then install mediaportal, get that all setup, music, video\films, pictures, and remotes (including mptray to start MP from green button mce remote), make sure everything works correctly, prior to getting involved with the TV side.

There is no "Golden Rule", but i find once everything configured correctly, this included having done the imdb information for all my DVD's, this alone can take a few hours, so you do not want to have to do it again, backup this install by copying whole mediaportal folder to external hdd\cd.

Then the TV side, which card\type\make are you going to be using, just in case there are any known issues, we can tell you about.
