Where is MP headed? (1 Viewer)

I must preface this post by saying what follows is in no way intended to offend anyone in any way... please keep your flame throwers holstered. :)

I have been researching the HTPC front for some time and have tried just about everything out there. I am now trying Media Portal. My initial testing and evaluation has been very positive so far and I feel you guys are on to something really special.

However, where is MP ultimately headed? It this a "Me Too" type product or something truely unique? What I mean by this is it seems, at least to me, to be a sort of a "MCE" biased product. It even looks and functions like MCE to some extent. One initial problem I have run across, is my Hauppauge 40 something button remote (came with my PVR150 card) does not work at all in RC4. Pouring through the forums produces lots of hits for "MCE" remotes and related hardware, but very little for non MCE branded stuff. I found a couple of things to try, but no difinitive solution to my problem.

Why no Win2000 support? Right now, I simply cannot justify a $100+ operating system for a box that serves one purpose. I already have win2000 and have been testing MP on it and it works great for the most part running on the older OS. Perhaps I don't know what I am missing not running it on XP, and I am sure there are technical reasons that make XP a better platform for MP, but from where I am sitting, it looks absolutely beautiful on top of win2000! :D

For the most part, this project is something I am interested in. I just thought I would get a couple of things off my chest before committing a lot of resources to it. Feel free to comment. :)

See the remote section in the config app. It clearly says XP with SP2 is needed for using the Hauppauge remote. Other things that make MP require XP is the stream buffer engine from MS which only works on XP.

That's what I thought as well. I select my hauppauge remote in config, but no worky. Does it rely on irremote.ini and hauppauge's irservice, or not?

That is a killer thread. :)

Ah... I missed that part. I understand how to get around the stream buffer requirement by following the thread cited above, but was not aware that the hauppauge remote requires XP as well. Is there a file I can copy to make the remote work in win2000 (I do own a legal copy of XP) similar to the stream buffer work around? :)

before the native support there was an irremote.ini fil for the hauppauge remote floating around. search the forum, there is a link. If you can´t find the file, ask flipger, he had the file on his webspace and edited the file. Don´t know if this will work, but if the remote works in general on win2000, chances are quite good.

Thanks, tomtom. I do vaguely remember reading a post in the forums about this. I will check it out further when I get home. I am liking MP more and more as I test it, but without remote control, the WAF goes totally out the window. :)

Just a little annoying to try and read it like this, isn't it?

    On W2K systems, copy irremote.DLL from %ProgramFiles%\WinTV to %ProgramFiles%\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal.

Once again: W2K (or anything else than XPSP2) is not supported, if you have any issues with MP on it, try if the same error occurs with XPSP2 before you post those problems here.
