Hi,
First post here - hello all!

I am about to install mediaportal for the first time and will be getting a plasma tv soon so i want to be able to browse and play media files on my pc through my plasma.

I'll probably be using the pc input on my plasma to connect from the dvi of my x800gto vga card (don't need full hdtv as yet so will be sticking to this vga card for a while and i won't be using mytv as i don't have a tv tuner card yet).

Can you please recommend me a remote control and receiver that i can control all the features of mediaportal with please? (I am using XP Pro).

Thanks
:)

thanks.
Have another question:

If i bought a media centre keyboard as well, firstly is it fully compatible with media portal and would also it allow me to access the pc's functions in the same way as a usual keyboard ie for ms word, web browsing etc. whilst my main wired keyboard is also connected to the pc?

Also i want to use media player classic as my video player within mediaportal as it seems to give much better picture quality. Will the mce remote be able to control mediaplayerclassic?

edit: i've just been reading about the streamzap remote control which seems to control lots of windows programs and has good reviews. Has anyone any experience of this remote?

Sorry for all the questions!!

:)

MCE Remote

I can not vouch for any other remote because the MCE remote is the only one I have used. I made my choice because I wanted something that would work with MythTV (Linux), MCE (M$) and Media Portal. Out of the 3 I have found I like media Portal the best and the MCE remote works great.

The MCE IR Reciever is nice and has two IR blasters for controlling a set top box. I am planning on using those to control the volume on my reciever so that I can use the MCE remote almost exclusively. In the future I may upgrade to a universial remote and use the MCE IR receiver with it.

All in all for the price you pay and what you get is well worth it.

P.S.

If your planning on using the MCE Remote with Windows XP Pro you may need to add an entry to the registry to get the remote to be able to wake up from standby. There are a couple of variations but the one I used is:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\usb]
"USBBIOSx"=dword:00000000

It now works perfectly.

I use the hauppauge 45 button remote which comes with the tv tuner. it can be a pain t setup for different applications but mediaportal has native support for it and it works great. only downfall is that you cannt use it to turn on the computer

    "USBBIOSx"=dword:00000000

    That is written to the registry, when you select the option in MP setup\general "allow other devices to wake" or similar as doing this from memory, if unselected it WILL delete this entry, and you will not be able to resume from standby.

    mce remote, save yourself some drama and just get one of them.
    I thought I'd be tricky and get a tuner card with a remote but the pain of getting it to work with windows or media portal just isn't worth it. gave up after a couple of weeks and bought a mce remote for AU$50 and haven't had a drama with it since.
    I'm not one to blow M$'s horn but they seem to have got the mce remote spot on.

    I have the MCE keyboard and remote, the keyboard is brilliant, it is IR so theoretically needs line of sight, but really works well, and works great from pretty much any angle/direction, also the battery life is superb, I have had the keyboard for well over 6 months, and used it for at least 3 hours a day, I am still using the original batteries. I dont know how well the MCE keyboard/remote works with MP since I still cant get MP running, but it works with most applications and would highly recommend them. I should warn you though, as far as I know you need to have XP MCE/Vista for it to work, although you may find drivers elsewhere. Also the keyboard does not come with a reciever, you must buy the remote aswell for that.
