Hi,

new to this and liking it so far.

unlike MCE my first play with Mediaportal is very positive and it was simple to set up and "just works" :D

what a refreshing change!

I have hit a slight stumbling block on my second machine.

I use an old Toshiba laptop for a bedroom HTPC and currently it locks at the "initialising directX" screen.

now although the specs say the graphics chipset (852GME) supports directX9 I am wondering if this may be my problem.

in fairness the laptop only has 512Mb RAM so I need to improve that but I don't want to do this if the graphics are not compatible with Mediaportal anyway.

it currently runs Vista media centre without issue so I was hoping that if it could cope with MS bloatware I would be OK.

could anyone confirm if they have Mediaportal working on this graphics chipset?

I really hope so as I don't want to have to go back to VMC if I can avoid it.:D

I will try a fresh install of Vista or XP and see if that helps but this was a fairly recent install

The specs say this is a dx8 chip not dx9, make sure you have latest bios\drivers and see if any improvement, sometimes setting the gpu memory in the bios from its auto setting to a defined amount of memory helps.

After that, flogging a dead horse springs to mind, sorry.

    thanks for the reply,

looks like there are many variants of this chipset and there are a couple that do DX9 but not mine.

I will try your ideas re. bios update and memory allocation - fingers crossed.

    well - no joy :(

this is a bit of a show stopper for me as I have a couple of old laptops/pc's that I use in other rooms that although old are more than capable of being used as media pc's.

unfortunately the DX9 requirement has rulled out Mediaportal for me.

I don't suppose there are any older versions that dont need DX9?

I guess that puts me back to Vista media center and the pain of trying to get that to work nicely.

thanks for the help and if I change my hardware in future I may well be back:D

P.S. it may be helpfull to clarify the hardware requirements as they currently have :

Requirements for running MediaPortal and/or the TV-ServerCPU: Intel P4 with 2.0 GHz / AMD XP-2000+ or above

    Memory: 1024 MB

Video card: DirectX 9 compatible video card with at least 128 MB of video memory such as:

ATI Radeon series (9600 and above or X300 and above)

NVIDIA GeForce, GeForce FX (5200 or above) and NForce series

Intel Extreme Graphics 2 (integrated i865G)

which although the i865G may be DX9 I now know mine is not - though it was not easy to find
