I have the Hauppauge 1600 card. With WinTV6 I'm getting all the QAM channels, but I wanted to try another tuner software. I installed the latest version of Media Portal, it picked up the QAM channles fine, except for a few.

Now after using Media Portal, I have tried going back to WinTV and QAM channels are no longer there, it's just a black screen. Is there any known conflict between the two programs? I have reinstalled WinTV a couple of times, but after using Media Portal, the QAM channels keep disappearing.

You can use for testing, but not recommended to have the 2 programs running side by side, as they are both trying to access the same hardware, and that is never good :)

Are TVService and the hauppauge scheduler both running, check under processes tab in task manager , if so, then they are both trying to access the same cards.

You would need to totally disable\uninstall either service for the other to work correctly.

The analog tuner in WinTV 6 works after closing media portal, juts not the digital tuner

Vista - Start Menu then type 'mmc' (XP Start>Run>'mmc')- this will open up the computer management console go to File>Services, if not listed go to File>Add Snap-in and add services from list on the left, click OK, it will appear on file menu now.

Scroll down the list and select TVService and click on 'Stop' in the panel to the left. This will stop TV Server so you should be able to use WinTV.
