There seems to be quite a few questions over which codecs are best and what post processing (if any) to use etc.

What codec and settings are you all using (Video & TV)? Also, which brand gfx card?

Hopefully we can get a general consensus over which codec and setup generally gives the best picture (obviously a lot of personal preference will be involved!)

So far im undecided, ill edit the post when i've tested them all!! :)

I use nVidia Purevideo for everything (TV, movies etc.) - both audio and video.

Other codecs installed: AC3-filter and FFDShow + "MP-package": MPA/MPV and DScaler.

Note: Latest DivX causes navigation issues.

Well I'lve had a quick look at it. I've only tested it for the TV module... I cant tell too much difference yet, but I guess I need to swap between codecs and compare - also, whatever codec I have, SD TV on a 1920x1080 diplay is going to look a bit rubbish!

I think ill test it with a DVD, or a HD trailer etc.

How about everyone else? what do you guys use?

    Hi,

    MPV for TV/DVD/MPEG
ffdshow for the rest like DivX / XviD
Using ffdshow also as postprocessor to sharpen and upscale the picture

Currently I am giving PureVideo a try. :)

This is a great thread idea! Stuff I need to know!

A noob question - how do you configure things so that you can use say:
    - purevideo for mpeg2 mpeg4 etc (so I can get hw acceleration)
    - ffdshow decoders for xvid/divx etc.

Where/how do you set this up?

    Hi,

coopers, this is done automatically. :)

The codec you can set within MP counts only for MPEG playback (TV/DVD/MPEG-Movies). So there you can choose nVidias Purevideo.
FFDshow is automatically used by Windows (hopefully), if you playback XviD, DivX, etc.

You can check this by using graphedit.

For those of you using ffdshow:

which settings are you using, and importantly, whats the speed of your pc (CPU and RAM should suffice).

After playing with ffdshow, it definately produces the best results (with scaling on and noise reduction etc) but it really taxes my CPU.

Im trying to decide whether the greater picture is worth the extra CPU heat and thus fan noise! :)

    What settings do YOU use?

I'm at work, so cant say exactly what im using.

To be honest Ive not been having much luck with ffdshow - i never seem to get a decent fps. I get a great pic though.

I have scale set to 1920x0 (so it always tries to scale to 1920 width and whatever height is appropriate.

I also have NR turned on.

I did try auto levels too, and the pic looked great! but my AMD64 3000+ cant really handle it! :(

Im trying to find a comprmise between quality and speed... I dont want my cpu always at 90 - 100% and the fans going crazy!!
