I'm using an Asus P5Q-EM with a 2.6Ghz core2 - board has onboard Intel G45 gfx.

    for sure ...
everything higher than a 4350 GPU (tested by myself) is running the fullHD MKV's ...
(use it with SAF ... that'll do a great an really good job)

    greatings

    hello

you have 2 choise gpu or cpu

    1. if you choose a good video card what decode h264 1080i/p
than it doesn't mater what cpu you use

    i tested 2 years ago
a semperon underclocked to 900mhz with a readon 2400 pro, , the computer was able to play bluray without lag (but ram speed must be at lease ddr400mhz)
(but warning do not use a cpu what is not SSE2 because of codec compatility, only work with arcsoft)

and if it s an integrated dxva gpu, the ram must be so fast as possible (because it s shared) ddr2 800 recommanded

mine media center is ddr2 667 with ION integrated gpu and it can have some lag on 1080i sometimes (ddr2 533 is laggy especialiy with sub's)

if you choose the 2nd solution , a good cpu without dxva (sofware mode)
than you need a dual core with coreavc

an athlon 4200+ play s very good 1080i/p (but the video card must not be to bad 64mb of memory can be slow down)

and if the memory is shared it can be some slow if other programe have a lot of memory acces) but lot less than in dxva mode

so the best way is with an agp/pcie card

Ok, i see that you are more experienced with hardware setup for a media center.

Maybe you can and will comment on my plannend "new" system setup.

    CPU: AMD 3500+
    GPU: Club3d HD 4670 (1024mb) ALTERNATE - HARDWARE - Grafische kaarten - PCIe kaarten ATI - Radeon HD4000 - Club 3D CGAX-H46724I

    RAM: 1Gb
    HDD: 2Tb ALTERNATE - HARDWARE - Harddisks / SSD - Serial-ATA - 3,5 inch - Samsung HD203WI

Later if i have everying working a what to upgrate the setup:

    Case ALTERNATE - HARDWARE - Behuizingen - Desktop / HTPC - SilverStone LC20M
    Case cooling: Noctua fans
    CPU cooling: ???
    PSU fan: ???

    Greetings

    hello

    the ati 4670 can play fine 1080p , recommanded h264 codec powerdvd 7.3, 8 & 9

but with exeption, older rip's in x264/h264 what have a profil higher than 4.1 are not dxva compatible

olso it can be problem with sub's outside of mpchc

if you planning using sub's than recomanded codec is mpchc build in codec (but the codec can't deinterlace, so not good for 1080i)

if you use vista or 7 than it s better to add 1 giga of ram

personaly the best way it's without dxva, base only on softwere codec like coreavc
because of some imcompatibility with dxva
but for that a good dual core is recommanded (and without integrated gpu)

other size if you would spare energy, or lower cost
using a atom 330 ion motherboard is a good solution

i choose that not for energy safe or low cost but i tryed to keep my old media center case what is mini-atx , i had not a lot of choise for motherboard
i needed a hdmi output and a pci slot

so i choosed the AT3N7A-I of asus

    my case is
