OK - useful info.
In MPC-HC, if you uncheck an internal 'transform' (decode) filter it forces it to use an external filter. If you have added filters in the 'external filters' section it will try to use those first, otherwise it will fall back to the standard Windows DirectShow mechanism to find filters which can decode the file.
When MPC-HC is playing, the 'filters' option on the 'play' menu will show you which filters are actually being used.
MediaPortal does the same thing - it will try to use the filters you have chosen but if these won't handle the file it falls back to Windows filter selection mechanism to try and play it. In other words, MP might not be using the filters you choose - you need to use something like RadScorpion’s blog MONOGRAM GraphStudio to 'connect to remote graph' when MP is playing in windowed mode and see which filters it's actually using.
