However, if I went to internal filters and unchecked MPEG2, then it would become choppy.

    OK - useful info.

In MPC-HC, if you uncheck an internal 'transform' (decode) filter it forces it to use an external filter. If you have added filters in the 'external filters' section it will try to use those first, otherwise it will fall back to the standard Windows DirectShow mechanism to find filters which can decode the file.

When MPC-HC is playing, the 'filters' option on the 'play' menu will show you which filters are actually being used.

MediaPortal does the same thing - it will try to use the filters you have chosen but if these won't handle the file it falls back to Windows filter selection mechanism to try and play it. In other words, MP might not be using the filters you choose - you need to use something like RadScorpion’s blog MONOGRAM GraphStudio to 'connect to remote graph' when MP is playing in windowed mode and see which filters it's actually using.

    ok I see.
I have nothing in external, and when I look at the filters section when I have mpeg2 unchecked it says ffdshow. (I have CCCP installed).

I will give the graphstudio a try later today to see if I can figure out what mediaportal is using.
Just to note, I think I do see a difference when I try the different decoders in media portal, some seem more choppy than others but all are choppy, but maybe I'm starting to see things.

I tried it and found it was using NVIDIA Pure Video, so I uninstalled it, then it was using Cyberlink and still choppy so I uninstalled cyberlink. Now it is using ffdshow which uses Gabest's codec I think and it WORKS!!

Thanks very much for your help.

I should also note that the UI seems to be more responsive with the 1.0.1 update
