2 Tuners, Simultaneous recording problems (1 Viewer)

Rob, thank you for updating us on your transition. Do you by chance have that model # handy? I believe my new hdd is a pretty fast one and so I am not sure if speed is an issue for me.

The old drive was a Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB (a low-energy drive). The new one is a Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB (which is a speed-optimised one).

Also are you having any issues with overlapping HD shows? That's where I was having issues.

I was - that's why I tried swapping the drive. I suspect it was the random access/seek time that was too slow on the green drive when writing two files at once. The black drive is considerably faster, and still very quiet in my Antec Fusion case. Quite a bit more expensive though.

Since installing the new drive I've only had a couple of overlapping HD recordings, but so far the stutter on overlap seems to be gone. So it SEEMS to have fixed it for me, but I wouldn't like to promise anything...

That looks interesting - I have noticed it seems to thrash the drive rather a lot when watching some recordings/channels.

Thank you both for helping me with this. rik for pointing me to the post, and we have interacted there.
Rob, you might want to look into that. I have replaced the 2 offending files and have tested it for a couple of minutes due to a lack of time, but it seems to have really freed up my hdd from having to constantly seek and write. The log files were clean during the 2 minutes. Normally, it would only last for about 10 secs before there was significant stutter on both files and continuity errors constantly being written onto the logs.

So in conclusion, I would say that miroslav was onto something as it was clear to me that the hdd could not keep up with the incredibly large number of seeks and writes requested of a lone hdd. It was, IMHO, a coding error. As I said before, at times, when watching a live HD program while recording a second HD program, MP seems to be ok with it. However, the real problems began when recording 2 simultaneous HD programs.

Currently there are no overlapping HD programs for me but when it does come about, I'll be sure to report back to both threads.

I haven't tried it yet - I'm running 1.1.2, and Microslav says he's going to post a compatible version of the fix, so I'm waiting for that rather than installing the beta version. Sounds promising though. Maybe I didn't need that faster drive, but I wanted more capacity anyway so nothing really wasted.
