24p not smooth in Mediaportal (1 Viewer)

23.376 is very weird. According to this thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1333324
your ATI should outputs 23.977 or 23.978.

My stock Nvidia outputs 23.972 and with a custom resolution I reach 23.97615. But Unfortunately, ATI does not offer to tweak resolution in Catalyst Control Center. So you are stuck with your stock output.

I suggest you, if you really have 23.376, to test other driver, maybe those at Guru3d website can do the trick.

I checked and you're right it detects 23.977 and 23.978 and like you said I cannot make a tweaked resolution. I'll try the link and see if that helps. I'll keep you guys informed and I'm sure with all this help I will fix it.

AndrePrins, regarding your frame "hop" every so often.

I had something very similar and tweaked for weeks trying to track it down. It ended up being my Motion Plus setting on the TV - I have a similar TV to yours, mine is the Samsung UE46D8000. After I set Motion Plus to "Clear", I don't notice it anymore. Worth a try.

Hi Caesium: You fixed it!! Thanks a lot! But there is one downside to this, the picture becomes unstable (a bit like an old 50hz CRT screen), because it's no longer reducing the blur, only the judder. I tried a few 24p movies (Hugo and Avatar) and in both movies I see that the picture is no longer smooth. I tried all other settings suggested in this link: http://support-us.samsung.com/cyber...6039379!1761676444!7501!-1!NONE!1298367221195 but the only setting that removes the 'hop' issue is Clear. My eyes are sensitive somehow, my wife didn't even notice the difference till I showed her the demo where the screen is split. For now I've set it back to smooth and I guess I have to live with the fact that a 24p movie is 'hopping' from time to time. If you have more suggestions on the settings of the Samsung screen...thanks in advance.

i have a very similar samsung led tv (bought it september last year) and i can indeed set it to 200Hz "smooth" - ive needed to turn on the dymanic refresh rate changer in "general" settings
im running Fraps in the background, not doing anything, just running minimised in the sys tray and it seems to make everything smooth

Hi SiLenTYL: I'll install Fraps tonight, no idea what it will help (from what I read on the website it's for capturing), but who knows I'm already using the dynamic refresh changer. I've set 23.976 to 23hz. I've tried the same thing with 24hz, but no difference. That's also why I started wondering if it wasn't a problem with the TV instead of the htpc.
btw: it's not that the picture is not smooth, it's only hopping from time to time, like it's resending a frame. So far I have only seen this with HD material, not with a DVD. TV playback is also not a problem.

Strange that you prefer MotionFlow or whatever it's called on your TV. I'd imagine most HTPC enthusiasts would hate it as it removes the "film look". I for one can't stand such settings.[/i]

I'm not sure what you mean with the film look, but if you mean it should be like the old 50hz CRT screens that really hurt my eyes, I prefer smooth
I have to admit that I have strange eyes that see almost every 'flickering' in screens. I hate it as much as my wife does, because she doesn't understand my issue. Only when I point her on what I mean she says, oh that
As you can see in the links above a lot of people have this same strange thing where one has no problem with the way it looks with clear enabled (that's how it's called when you have a Samsung) and others have.

I've done a lot of tests last weekend and so far there is no real solution but setting Motion Plus to Clear or accept that from time to time there is a little hop. I've searched a lot on the internet and also found that a lot of people have this issue. The strange thing is that when I play the same movies throught the AllShare option on my Samsung screen I have not issue at all, so it's only through hdmi. In some samsung tv versions (B) this problem doesn't exist, so I'm sure that samsung somehow should be able to fix this. I'm goint to write them an email about this. Thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions! I'll let you know the result from my communication with Samsung.
