I just wanted to comment 2 ideas to see if its at all possible and to see if others find it interesting.

    1)
Would it be possible to make tvserver share the timeshift of the channels being timeshift with the rest of the clients.

This means that if i am watching channel1 in clientpc1 and after 30min watching it, clientpc2 starts watching the same channel1 then that clientpc2 will have available the 30min that are already saved.

I have also notice that tvserver will create a new file for each client even if they are watching/timeshifting the same channel. (obviously this would be solved implementing the paragraph above)

    2)
Would it be possible to save as recording a serie or movie that you are watching based on the timeshift + recording option?
This would work as follows.... you are watching/timeshifting a movie, 30min after you decide you want to record it, so you hit REC and it "cuts" the "not in time timeshift" and adds recording till the EPG says it finishes.

i hope i expressed correctly what i mean. if not i can try again.

what do other mp members thing?

Nope, that won't work because if user 1 switches to another channel, user B would also see the newly tuned channel without doing anything => not good

That would be theoretically possible but there many potential risks that could lead to instability.
    That's why nobody tried that

    I like your ideas, Gixxer.

A way to solve both issues would be to name the timeshift files after the current show name taken from EPG instead of live1-0.ts.tsbuffer1.ts. MP could open a new timeshift file every time a new show is being timeshifted and remove them X minutes after the show is over.

This way User 2 can continue watching the show after User 1 changed channel and created a new timeshift file and if you decide to keep the show after watching, the file will simply not be removed if the user pressed record.

    sound good indeed !!

i think doing that way, or something similar would make it not so difficult to implement.

by saying this i dont want to offend any dev as i have no clue on how to code this, but after seeing what mediaportal does, i guess its not something much more difficult that other things already done.

after saying this, i must repeat that this are only ideas i had in mind and wanted to share, no request here at all.

    Cheers.

    I like idea 2,
MythTV had it, Its a feature I really missed moving over to media portal. If you or a friend start watching something and then realise somebody else might like it you just hir record.
I think I had MythTV Set to time shift the whole program. This would also allow continual viewing no annowing stop/start when you press reccord

idea 2 is working in the built in TV engine, it's just that the TV Server doesn't have this function.
It's a shame, as it's the big thing that I miss from the built in TV Engine.

really? i have not used the built in tv engine so i didnt know that. maybe that means that its not so difficult to implement and that some day it may be added to mp tv server.

The implementation in TVE2 is coming from Stream Buffering Engine. So, maybe you could ask some MS developers to do the porting to TVE3 :D

nevermind, i just post those 2 ideas to see what others thought and in case they were easy to implement.

Sage TV has all these functions, but MP is a better product overall which is why i am sticking with it.

It would be awesome if these functions were implemented. Maybe not in MP1, but how about MP2 ??
