I have an ASUS M2R32-MVP mobo with integrated SoundMax Digital HD Audio. I have it connected via digital COAX to my Onkyo receiver. I have the receiver set to Dolby digital on the input I am using.

I have tested a movie ripped and playing the VOB files. I have also encoded a movie to avi w/ac3 5.1 audio muxed in. I am fairly sure it is a setting, not so much my media. I'm only getting stero sound, not 5.1, any ideas?

I assume you mean that you want your receiver to do the decoding.

I don't know if this helps, but I found that with most sound cards I've used that support digital out I have needed ac3filter. It's free from here. Setting it up may require some trial and error, but I found that selecting SPDIF passthrough works. Ac3filter solves so many problems.

Also you will need to make sure that your sound card's control panel is set to use SPDIF out.

I currently use a VIA Envy24 and found that a combination of settings on ac3Filter and the sound cards control panel were required to pass through the digital sound to the receiver.

Sorry if this isn't terrificly informative but it's really a matter of playing and googling, but post back here and I will help where I can.

If AC3Filter doesn't work for you, try ffdshow. The S/PDIF pass-through settings are in the Mixer/Output section of the configuration app.
