If I'm using a receiver for my surruound sound, can I just keep the optical cable from my sat. box to my receiver hooked up and use that for sound, or do I have to some way encompass the audio cable into the computer first, and then into the receiver?

Thanks

It depends because if its a software card, you should be able to. If its a hardware encoder card you cant because the encoder produces up to a second lag so the audio will be out. Also if you use timeshifting youd never keep the audio even close to in time.

Any suggestions on a cheap tv tuner card so that I can bypass the computer and go straight to the receiver with the optical audio?

Cant really recommend any because to be honest the general direction on this forums is to get away from software cards altogether. Apart from the fact that you can bypass the computer, the SW card cant timeshift, and for now it cant watch/record at the sametime either plus they use a lot more cpu cycles (if the cpu is loaded during a recording, you will get a lot of stuttering). And since no cards come with optical in (on the tv tuner) there is no easy solution.

What type of digital tv do you have? Can you not use a dvb-t/c/s card so you wont need a digital stb?

ok then I guess then what I should I say is my main goal is to create a pc to do this as cost effective as possible w/hooking it up to my Surround system.

So that would be the main suggestion that I would be looking for. I'm looking to spend the least amount of money as possible. I have a Yamaha receiver that is capable of just about anything so that shouldn't be a problem. I also have a 46'' Sony projection. If that helps.

Sorry I meant what type of broadcast does the set to box use? Sat? Cable? Over the air?

Because if you got a digital card, you could use digital out (coax or optical) and basically mimic the setup you have now but it would be of higher quality (you dont have to input the video through an analogue card).
