When I browse through my recorded tv section, I notice a lot of System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
    at TvPlugin.TvRecorded.Compare(GUIListItem item1, GUIListItem item2) lines.

I'm sure there could be something wrong with this recorded tv-directory (because it dates from the time I used WMC), but that should (theoretically) not lead to NullRef's.

    Logs attached.

    Something is messed up here...

if all your recordings are in one folder can you rename that folder. Then go into TV setup and the recording tab and select the remove invalid entries (this should remove everything from your database). Then close setup, re-open, go to the same tab and select the import options.

Cool, I think my windows is quite confused.
Even after renaming the directory (from d:\recorded tv to d:\recorded tvold), restarting tvserver, restarting windows and what not, I can still play my recordings in mediaportal. I checked with procexp, and it says mediaportal has d:\recorded tv\blabla open, while the directory is named "recorded tvold"!
So the trick you proposed didn't work. I can't get the tvserver to think the entries are invalid. (Although I could move the files somewhere else, see if mediaportal still can find them...)

Could this have something to do with the fact that I have a symlink "recorded tv" (pointing to d:\recorded tv) in my videos folder?
I initially did this so I can share all my videos+recordings with a single share, but perhaps it's more common to just have my recorded tv in my videos folder?

Yep can you remove the symlink and then retry the above

Well that did the trick (although it took some time to individually confirm each delete...). And my guess is that it was not the symlinks that caused the trouble, but the fact that those recordings were recorded from stations we don't have anymore.

Can you explain what you have done in terms of MP here. Did you have as full set of recordings with channels and then delete some channels that had linked recordings ?

Well, that directory has (or better: had) a long history, from back in the days that I used Windows media center..., so there still are some .dvr-ms files in there, as are the normal recorded files from mediaportal.
However, recently our cable provider decided to go digital, and to prevent a raise in price, it has cut down the number of channels...
In Mediaportal, I deleted all channels and did a re-scan (and probably renamed one or two channels in the process), so chances are that there are some recordings for which the channels don't exist anymore (especially because the channels that were discontinued, were the more popular channels here).
