I started with the bare minimum - NetRemote, M-Audio Soundcard and Jriver MC and it ran off my PC, since I was only using 2 zones initially and the amp was not that important.
Run the client on the server and i'm pretty sure the magic trick gives sound
yeah I've seen ipimp and have tested it a little its pretty cool. Will try to do a demo with a small test scenario of 1 server and 3 clients as well as the server having the client software installed and to attempt to do a few things at once.
Maybe control the different audio channels in windows (custom app) for the time being just to enable/disable individual channels but i guess to achieve true zoning, I'd need a better soundcard & amp.
I still feel I don't understand what you are trying to achieve.
Is what you are trying to do just about music, because if it is then maybe I do get it.
If not, and you are trying to play a movie on a client, and then somehow stream the audio through your multi-zone amp, you are going to have horrible sync issues.
For mine, play a movie on a client and have the client produce the sound. Sort of takes the server out of the equation as far as playback is concerned doesn't it?
Of course I might not be on the same page, if so I apologise.
Even if it is just about music, you can still only stream one music file from MediaPortal to the amp, at a time. I don't think the ASIO player as it is presently can stream music to more than one soundcard/output, is this correct?
I believe that is true, but I just don't understand what the OP is trying to achieve.
Ther are other solutions out there which will allow multi-zoning, e.g. xLobby, which used multiple instances of Winamp I think to output to multiple soundcards, but you wouldn't use that for video playback I don't think.
Maybe if the OP makes it a little clearer, we can help.
Sorry for the confusion, it is a post aimed at covering (or at least trying to cover) every aspect of an all-in-one solution.
I do not want to stream the audio of a VIDEO track throughout the house
But i do want to have something where i have complete control in each room what they see (streaming video)
As well as have one client setup that handles all my music needs (a sort of Sonos replacement)
But I would like to achieve this with maximum flexibility and possibly minimum software.
I would like to use iPimp for talking to a pc that has an amp connected to it and play a certain track, in the early stage this track will play amongst all my channels (living room, rumpus, outdoor area). At a later stage i would like to consider multiple zones.
As for video streaming, its the easiest approach as each TV will have its htpc client.
I think I've worked out most of the aspects thanks to your answers here and hopefully I can eventually write my experience with trying to have an all-in-one solution.
Edit:
Stumbled across this beast
Universal Remote MX-6000
I wonder how this baby will behave itself? Pricey for trial/error Seems good.
