...but it looks like I'm probably going to have to change at least the mobo before I can use this tuner.
    :(
Sorry to hear that. Before you go hunting for a new mobo, have you checked the BIOS for PCIe/chipset settings that you could tweak? Of course I'm not recommending that you just make random changes to settings that you don't understand, however surely it would be worth at least having a quick peek...

I did have a look for anything promising-sounding in the bios, but there isn't much in there that sounds like it relates to PCIe - I was thinking there might be some sort of IO memory address or IRQ settings for the slots, but couldn't find anything obvious. I'm hoping for a reply from BG support in case they can think of anything now I've narrowed it down a bit.

I gave up with trying to get the BGT tuner to work on my old mobo and swapped it for one with an AMD chipset this morning. Working fine now :)

So there's something about that board (it was an MSI K9N6SGM-V) that the BGT3600 didn't get on with. Either the nforce chipset or something more specific to that particular board design.

So, the conclusion is there's no problem with XP (or Windows 7) but with that MSI motherboard.

BTW, if anybody's interested, the "new" (actually second hand) board is an ASUS M2A-VM HDMI (but without the HDMI part installed). All other hardware and the OS installation remains the same as before (I just changed the chipset drivers).

Cheers for reporting back Rob! :D
Hopefully the frustration is over now and you can sit back and enjoy the telly.

    Thanks :)
Almost sorted now - still can't get it to suspend or hibernate without hanging on the "preparing to hibernate" screen, so it's having to stay always-on for the mo, but that's a different matter...
Tuner's good, BTW - very happy with it now I've got it working.

Just for info, this tuner is WAY more sensitive on both DVB-S and -T than my old ones (Hauppauge HVR3000 and Twinhan 3020C). I can now pick up all DVB-S FTA channels, including ones on Eurobird - I spent ages fiddling with my dish positioning before to try to get channels like Scuzz and the Zone ones to work reliably, now they just work :)
And the DVB-T works even though there's scaffolding round the aerial at the moment!
