Anyone using FFDShow for their MPEG-2 TV Decoder? (1 Viewer)

I am using FFDShow to decode my mpeg-2 video. As far as HD goes, everthing looks great and I couldn't be happier. SD television, which is most of what I'm viewing, is not looking great on my HD television. Specifically things like text and logos look awful. Very jagged and smaller text is simply not readable.

I used to use a STB for viewing SD TV on an HD set and I don't recall things looking this bad.

Can anyone recommend changing any settings in the FFDshow configuration that could cause SD TV to look better?

Any input would be very much appreciated.

MediaPortal = app of the year btw :D

Are you absolutely sure you are using ffdshow (ie check with graphedit).

I don't think ffdshow is a good choice for an mpeg-2 codec. I think even MPV is better. A lot of folks here seem to use Power DVD 8.

Really? Ok, I'll give powerdvd a shot see if I have any luck with it. MPV didn't look that great either to be perfectly honest.

Might just have to live with the poorer quality.

With ffdshow you need to set the deinterlace filter if the TV is interlaced (my setting: linear blending) and also the resize filter (my settings: resize to screen resolution, no aspect ratio correction, resize method, fast bilinear for luma and chroma). Also set a crop of a few pixels if you are getting unsightly blur or data on the edges. Alternatively you could try DScaler MPEG filter which seems to give reasonable results with less fiddling.

The recent builds of ffdshow now also work for h.264 TV - see my post here.

If anyone is following this thread, I tried powerdvd and found it was better then MPV for fast moving scenes, but the quality seems to be worse in general. I'm going to try the settings jo16v suggested, and will post my results

I am now pretty much using dscaler all the time for MPEG2 and ffshow for h.264- if you want to try dscaler you can get it here. If you are using ffdshow and deinterlacing, you might want to change the setting in ffdshow to linear blending as I've found this gives a better picture.

For someone who doesnt know much about codec packs is there a good generic one with minimum tweaking?
