ASIO - unable to play audio (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Firstly, thanks to all involved for writing and continuing to update such an excellent piece of software.

As the problem I am experiencing doesn't seem to be specific to an individual SVN, it seemed best to post here in the Listen Music->General area first.

Over the last few months, I have been trying various SVN builds in an attempt to get bit perfect audio functioning via ASIO within MediaPortal. The builds that I have tried are 13308, 13107, 13533 and 14663, unfortunately all without success.

It's worth noting that I have succeeded in getting bit perfect audio functioning with other software, namely foobar 2000 and J. River Media Center 12 via ASIO4All. I am also able to get audio files to play in the MediaPortal SVN's above, using BASS with ASIO disabled.

The file types attempted have been flac, wma, mp3 and dts wav, with ASIO4All and M-Audio Revo 7.1 asio drivers. All seem to generate the same error in the MediaPortal log file for the BASS engine. The engine is "unable to play" the first file, then second and subsequent files generate an exception.

Upmix is disabled, output set to 100, fades are disabled and gapless playback is selected. Visualisations and DSP options are also disabled.

Output from the MediaPortal Test Tool is attached. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

I see an exception in the log, when trying to set the rate.
Maybe there's something wrong in getting the rate for the flac file.

Please try with a mp3 file and let me know the result.

    Hi Helmut,

Thanks for taking the time to assist.

Please find attached the logs following tests with MP3 files. A reboot had occurred just before I ran the test. It seems as though a similar exception error to that with the flac files is being raised.

    Thanks,
    Paul

Ok, please run the attached "BASS Asio.exe" (unzip it to any dir).

Select a file, mp3, wma and flac files are supported, and then try the "Play" button.
After that do a stop and try with the "Play Advanced" button.
Post bass.log, which is ceated in the same dir.

Thanks for the BASS ASIO utility. I think it has helped me make some good progress by identifying the cause of the exception errors.

After running the utility the first time with an MP3 file, the exception error was rasied, similar to that seen in MP. You can see this in bass.test1.log.

Out of interest, I clicked Settings and the dialogue for ASIO2KS was shown. This somewhat unexpected and tipped me off that perhaps the first device in the list was being selected for output.

I had three Kernel Streaming / ASIO devices installed:
    ASIO2KS
    ASIO4ALL V2
    M-Audio Revo ASIO

I removed ASIO2KS from my system and tried again. Test 2, with an MP3 file resulted in success. See bass.test2.log.

Test 3 (bass.test3.log) with a flac file was also successful using the utility.

Test 4 (bass.test4.log) using a 44Khz DTS WAV file from Swedish Radio, generated audible white noise, indicating that the audio is possibly being resampled somewhere in the chain. This same file still plays fine from J River Media Center via ASIO4ALL V2.

Since removing ASIO2KS, I have also had another go with MP. While the exception error is no longer generated and MP3 and flac files appear to be playing as indicated by the track timer, only silence is being heard.

So some good progress, but I'm not quite there yet.

    Paul,

which device have you selected in Configuration -> Music -> ASIO?
    The M-Audio Revo ASIO?

    try that please.

Also, could i get this 44khz DTS WAV file from Sedish Radio?
    Can i download it somewhere?
If not, could you upload it for me to rapidshare or somewhere else and PM me the link?

    In Configuration -> Music -> ASIO, I had been using ASIO4ALL V2.

After a reboot, I changed the Configuration -> Music -> ASIO to M-Audio Revo ASIO.

At first, this seemed to have worked. I can get audio to play, the first time MediaPortal is executed. However second and subsequent executions of MediaPortal fail to play audio. The song timer continues to roll over, but takes around 3 seconds for each second. I hope that makes sense.

Another thing I tried (and I realise this is not recommended) was to:
    - install 0.2.2 straight over the top of the existing MP installation
    - put SVN v14663 over the top of that
    - check that the audio was configured for ASIO with M-Audio Revo ASIO

Then when starting MP, again for the "first time", audio worked just like after a reboot. However again, second and subsequent executions of MP failed to play audio via ASIO. Again the song timer was ticking over, but appeared to take around 3 seconds to move to the next second.

All the above tests were done with MP3 files.

For your reference, the DTS WAV files that I have been using, can be downloaded from the Swedish Radio Sound Archive here. I have been using "Intro" for my tests.

    Thanks for your ongoing assistance.
