    My wife observed this, and I can confirm that it happens - I've seen it:
    -If a 4:3 program is on, black vertical bars are on both sides, ad expected. (zoom=normal)
    -During commercial break, widescreen content is sent.
    -After the commercial, the 4:3 program is zoomed in to, almost no vertical black bars remain, - no zoom mode is ok.
    -toggling tv between fullscreen/window does not help.
    -switching TV off, then on, (using TV off/on) - fixes the problem instantly.
    -I've also tried to use another MPEG codec, it did not help.
