ATI Avivo and also correct multichannel out to reciver? (1 Viewer)

I am just blown away how good MP is and I am so glad I am using this. I have spent days and days reading posts and walkthroughs and have it all set up.

I am currently using an ATI 4550 HDMI video card (with ATI CCC drivers and then the Realtek HDMI drivers for audio) over Vista32. Everything works well. I have a 7.1 speaker setup on my Onkyo 605 receiver. Everything works like a dream.

The reason I am posting this is because I am simply not familiar with what i am supposed to hear on my receiver (just finally got this receiver).

I have followed the FFDshow config, have installed the extra stuff as described. When media portal is on or just sitting in Windows, it shows Multichannel on my receiver. If I play a movie, the thing flickers and changes to either DD or DD + DTS depending on the movie and I think I also saw DD EX. If I play some AVI's it stays on Multichannel. It seems to sound correct. Am I doing this right or should it always show multichannel?

I used the mediaportal guide by Goose from here:

However I installed the ATI's Avivo drivers package. When I configure the MP setup to use the MPEG-2 Video Decoder, I use the one recommended in the guide: MPV Decoder
I get the choice of FFdshow and also now ATI CCC, ATI multiplexor and ATI something else. Should I use the ATI ones?

I am using an Intel q6600 with 4 GB or RAM on Vista 32. Nothing ever stutters so maybe I should leave things well enough alone. I am now just trying to get my picture quality better with regular DVD’s that I have ripped to my HD. With a 52” screen things don’t look all that great at 1920x1080 and no matter what changes I do on FFdshow video config, it makes little difference. MKV rips from Blu Ray however look amazing.

Your setup sounds good to me except for one thing. So far you are passing the DTS or DD audio from movies to your receiver which is good. Not all movies with have a surround sound track which is why sometimes it will stay on your "multichannel" setting. The only thing I would consider is to try and keep the audio as close to the source as possible. This is just my preference but I would leave it on 2 channel for audio that is not truly multi-channel. Other then that small detail it looks like the hdmi audio is being passed perfectly to your decoder.
