Best way to rip DVDs? (1 Viewer)

I've upgraded my server and now have 4Tb of free space so I thought I'd rip all my DVDs so they're all available from all my clients.

I use the moving pictures plugin so am wondering: what is the best way to rip?

Just rip the video_ts folder to the server and leave as is?
Rip to an ISO?
Convert to something else? (MKV, MP4 etc.)

Any help would be appreciated.

AW: Best way to rip DVDs?

Hei

I make my Movies to ISO with FabDVD. I take only the main movie and create a movie

Folder-> My Sister's Keeper
file->fanart.jpg
file->folder.jpg
file->tt1078588.iso

and the MP-Database can use the "imdb number (tt1078588)" it works great.

    AW: Best way to rip DVDs?

    I was trying a couple of things to get my DVDs on the harddrive lately and I must agree Zippo that an ISO is the best option. I could not find a suitable solution with XVID or something. Asynchronous sound, problems with the subtitles if you want two languages and finally lot of effort and reduced quality.
    If you have unencrypted DVDs you can also try to just copy the VIDEO_TS folder into a new movie subfolder on your harddrive. Both ways work fine with moving pictures.

    I have pretty good results with MakeMKV. I've ripped all of my DVDs with it. I prefer .mkv as i don't have to mount my isos.
    Initially i ripped my dvd into iso, too. But i find mkv easier to handle and there is no reduction of quality.

    I'd prefer to keep the video as is though rather than compress down further. I have plenty of space so don't need to reduce file size etc. which handbrake will do.

    Well in that case you should try MakeMkv. It does not reduce the file size or quality and is very fast compared to handbrake.
    I don't know if there is an improvement with handbrake, but 1,5 yrs ago it was awful slow on my system. Another good thing is that MakeMkv also rips almost any BluRay to mkv without all that muxing stuff you have to do with other software.

    Cheers, HD

    Thanks, Makemkv seems the simplest. I've been using it today and can rip a single layer DVD straight to MKV in about 10 minutes.
