Not enough information. What SP, Graphics, TV card etc etc.
Have you suested what the message suggests? Based on the message, you have SQL problems, not Media Portal problems. When starting the tv server config, did it ask you to enter the password? Did you save the password? (Defarult password is MediaPortal)
Cheers
Martin

Hi Lie,

I am not an expert but will try to assist you.

1) Make sure that you are logged in as local admin and that you have internet connection
2) Uninstall MP from add or remove programs
3) Delete folders:
C:\Program Files\Team MediaPortal
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Team MediaPortal
4) Reboot PC
5) Uninstall MS SQL or MySQL from add or remove programs
6) Reboot PC
7) Delete contents of the following folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Temp (you might not be able to delete all of the files, so don't worry; also you will need to go to tools->folder options->view tab->select "show hidden files and folders" in order to view temp folder)
C:\Windos\temp (you might not be able to delete all of the files, so don't worry)

I would try to install MS SQL as per instructions TV-Server/install-SQL-Server - MediaPortal Manual Documentation ,
sql management studio and configre MS SQL it TV-Server/Configuration/SQL-Server - MediaPortal Manual Documentation.

Now try running setup and select "sql server is allready present and will be used for" when you reach "please select SQL server you want to use" step.
Finish install and click on tv server configuration (or MediaPortalConfiguration if it is single seat installation). At this stage you should be prompted for SQL user name and password, make sure that you press test button first to make sure that you didn't do typo and if it is successfull click on save.

Hope you will succeed with installation.

Sorry for providing you info on how to configure MS SQL and not MYSQL. Here is a link for MYSQL TV-Server/install-MySql5 - MediaPortal Manual Documentation

Have you tried installing application?
Don't give up on MP just now! You haven't even tried to play with it. You will not find any software with so many plugins and nice functionality. Yes you will need to spend quite some time in order to setup everything but eventually you will.
What are your needs for application? (e.g. watch tv, on multiple pcs, movies, radio, music, youtube, etc)
I use MP mainly for watching tv, music and videos on 2 computers, so i have MP tv server and MP client on one pc in leaving room and MP client in my bedroom and i am very happy with my setup (well nearly as i am planning adding one to my kitchen:D).
You could try gbpvr for windows (it didn't work with my tv card though) or mythtv for linux.
Let me know what are your requirements and I will try to assist you with a selection of the application.

What tv source do you have at work (cable, satelite, STB) and what tv card do you have?
Do you have local admin rights at work or you are using restricted domain account? Will you need epg?
Sql database is required by this application in order to store all configuration such as channels, channel mappings, program settings, etc. This is much better to keep all settings in one database and retrieval is faster. Imagine text file with 5000 records with channel settings and application requests one channel frequency, it will take much longer using text file then sql database.
Also have a look at the manuals Home - MediaPortal Manual Documentation . There you will find pc requirements and installation guides.
