Can a Developer suggest which "extender" is the best bet? (1 Viewer)

Here is my dilemma:

I've ordered an Apple TV and it's on its way. But I am having second thoughts, all due to Media Portal.

Apple TV has been extensively hacked (see this http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page) and can be a pretty good self-contained box, which apparently can be made into a reasonably easy to use PVR with an Elgato TV Tuner stick. The main disadvantage is the 720p limit, but frankly, since most extenders go to a bedroom display, and since most of those are less than 42" or less, higher resolution is kind of wasted (at least for me.) Otherwise it's good-looking, quiet, small and cheap.

The alternative is the new Lynksys DMA2100 HD extender for MCE. That one is not hacked (yet?) and the main downfall is that it works ONLY with MCE, which means I have to use MCE instead of MP, which I don't want to. But I suppose I can go back to it for a few months, if I believe that MP will work with it soon.

BUT, I am curious if any of the developers here are working on creating a way to use an extender with MP, and if so, which one?

My feeling is, since most of the developers are not in the US, the MCE extenders may be more readily accessible than the Apple TV box, and thus more likely to be adapted to work with MP.

Anyone privy to the plans for using extenders with MP care to comment?

Thanks!

Anyone with any thoughts on this?

I just got the Apple TV box and my hands are itching to crack it open....

Thanks, diehard2.

I guess I'll just open up the Apple TV, hack it, and use it kind of as a standalone..., really don't want to go back to MCE.

That would be unfortunate, I wouldn't like to keep spreading pc's through the house... too much maintenance, potential issues and database sharing. The MCE extender from Linksys does sound very good, but is MCE. pushing back into coax as you could do in the old VHS days gives a too poor effect on today's lcd screens, so a simple black-box like extender would be very very good.

    maxtrash:

A stable and feature-complete release of MediaPortal 2 is still a long way off. But theoretically, yes you are right. Having full UPnP support would (will?) make MediaPortal 2 compatible with many "extenders" out there.

    Cheers,

The SageTV Extender looks pretty nice for 200bux with HDMI. I'd like to leverage MP to stream HD content throughout the house but it looks like I'll have to use PC's at each TV location. I'm going to wait until the Geforce 8300 chipset(possibly use intel g35) is released, but if predictions are right 90$ for mobo(integrated GPU, HDMI), 50$ case/PSU, 50$ RAM, 150$ cpu and I'm looking at the 300-400$ range already.
