Elvis56, what you're noticing is the low quality resolution video on a large display. Are you sure Windows Media Player is "sharper"? You may just have different brightness and contrast settings, hence the green blotches.

What model plasma do you have?

well its a 42 inch LG plasma about 2 to 3 year old model. I am using SAF with Power DVD codec for Mpeg2. Thing is though I cannot change any of the Power DVD settings in the properties menu. Brightness, Saturation etc. They are all stuck at 0 ( in the middle). I cannot move the sliders at all.

Any chance that real details could be given instead of just "Use SAF" or "It's built in, you don't need to configure anything"?

I understand why you'd want to keep things simple so that the typical user can just set it and forget it, but in these forums there tends to be many of us that would like a little more detail behind what SAF is doing. It's not always true that DXVA will give a better picture and as a long-time ffdshow user, I'm not comfortable with just switching to SAF without more details.

As it stands from what I've read, SAF is yet another codec pack. It's just one that's been tuned by a MediaPortal user based on his personal preferences and promoted (by the author) as the best one to use. I haven't seen compelling arguments for it's use instead of ffdshow. Are there or is it really just an alternative for those that don't want to get into the details of configuring things?

I can agree that ffdshow are not bat, but lack of DXVA make it useless for lot of people.
I need DXVA for MPEG2 live TV becouse of deintelacing - HW deinterlacing is is simply the best for realtime processing.
And you are right that one of SAF aim are to be simple as possible.

If you will use Xvid decoder, there are postprocessing tab on decoder properties - that is all.

    EDIT:
BTW - i newer write anywhere that you will get better picture quality if you will use DXVA. But DXVA give you perfect deintelacing, so you can have better picture quality.

If you have powerfull CPU and lot of time to configure ffdshow use it, but lot of us haven't - that why i created SAF.
