    Hi Guys,

This is most likely a silly question - but here goes anyway - if I have a STB that outputs via DVI or HDMI is there a way to catpure that as an input to my HTPC??

The reason I ask is that my cable provider (Foxtel in Australia) are *finally* going HD in the coming months and I note that they are offering digital output via DVI and HDMI - and I'm thinking (read: hopeing) this means I can do away with my trusty Hauppauge PVR analog capture card - which is great but obviously introduces loss - and move to digital capture....

Is this possible??? am I missing something???

Yup, you are missing the fact that unfortunately, the data coming digitally is all encrypted :-( This means that your will still have to record in Analogue (I assume that it is the same in Australia as it is in North America)

Is this possible? My STB has HDMI output and it would be great to get rid og the scartcable :)

It isnt possible at the moment because there are no digital capture cards on the market right now. about the closest thing you'll have is the Hauppage HD-PVR when its released later this year. It can input HD signals through component inputs, but again, we're still dealing with analog signals here.

There are no digital (DVI, HDMI, etc...) capture cards on the consumer market. :(

I think technically DVI is a two way interface, but I don't think anyone has ever made a card that can take a DVI input.

Remember that HDMI capture card obviously doesnt support hdcp as that would be contradictory, so either your signal must have no hdcp, or you need to use a hdcp remover which are illegal in many countries and i dont think will be guarenteed to work forvever (due to the nature of the hdcp handshake or something i think)

Been around for ages now. It is the only one I've ever heard of though.

That is not a consumer grade input card. That card would be used for video editing professionals.

    - It doesnt support HDCP like eXDee said
    - it only supports a maximum resolution of 1080i50 (which means it's designed only for the european market)
    - It's priced out of the consumer space
