I've been running MCE 2005 for a couple of years now but would like to try this software to see if it does some things that I can't otherwise, like use a computer for a frontend.

Can I install this on my mce box as a trial without blowing that install away? Are there some specific services I would need to disable or shut off to make this happen?

Yes, was running MCE for about a year, then loaded MP on about 3 months ago and have stuck with it, and not gone back to MCE.

I don't think there's any services you have to explicitly stop in MCE to run MP, so just load it on and give it a try... I did stop/disable the MCE scheduler and maybe something else once I decided I wasn't going to use MCE anymore... I'd check the services right now but the kids are watching something... :)

Good luck!

You might want to disable autorun at start for MCE, and install mp-tray to prevent mce from starting when you push the green button(starting mp instead). If you decide to stick with MP I suggest you look in the wiki here on how to stop MCE from running at all.

Other then that it should work, just make sure you have grabbed the latest windows and .net upgrades.

I too am an MCE refugee. I recommend running MSCONFIG and disabling all services and startup items that start with "Media Center" OR "eh" (see attachmensts). There are other things you can get rid of, but this is a more a question of taste, and what else you use on your PC. Sorry, I have a German-languge OS, but the attachments should be good enough to give you an idea what to look for. After using MSCONFIG, you will get a stupid warning dialog after restarting. Just click the checkbox to keep it from appearing again. (That is, until the next time you use MSCONFIG to change anything).
