Is recording in HD from the cable provider possible with MediaPortal? Currently, I get all my HD from my cable provider and I would like to record this along with the other digital stations I get. Also, I was going to get The WinTV® HVR-1600 MCE PCI TV Tuner Card from Dell. Is this supported with Mediaportal? Any help is greatly appreciated...Grecko

I've just recently added an HVR-1600 to my system and am currently using it to record OTA HD. TVE3 had some problems with it which forced me to revert back to an older build so be forewarned there are some issues with this particular card. As far as recording HD from your cable provider, I think this is where QAM comes into play (I may be wrong on that) so make sure the HVR-1600 you get supports that as I believe there are multiple versions of that card.

What is "QAM"? Sorry I am a little new to this. I am trying to decide what to buy. I just heard something about not being able to record in HD because of the cable companies encrypting HD signals. Is there any truth to this?...Grecko

if you can watch this HD-Channel in MediaPortal/TV-Server then you can also record it.
since MP is free, it just requires a bit sparetime to test :)

When you say confirmed? Do you mean you can record over-the-air hd or through the cable box. I have pretty common setup as most people do here in America....a cable box hooked to the tv which allows the HD channels. I am assuming you can just put the HTPC in between the cable box and the tv and use it to record HD TV. Is this correct? I have also read that this is not possible because of QAM? Any insights would be helpful as I am new to this....Grecko

I'm not 100% positive that what I'm about to tell you is correct, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Some cable companies send some high def channels over the cable unencrypted using QAM (a type of modulation). This allows you to tune these channels without using your cable box since they aren't encrypted. This is different from simply using an antennae to tune ATSC channels. Your tuner has to support QAM tuning in order for you to be able to actually tune those channels that are coming off of your cable line. This is how most of us in the US are doing things right now (or maybe I'm the only idiot with an antennae in my living room).

In order for you to use your cable box, you'd have to have a way to capture it's output which is probably where your problem will lie. The HVR-1600 only has coax and s-video inputs. Coax is for tuning ATSC or QAM (if supported) and the s-video input isn't going to give you a true high def picture from your cable box.

Does that help any at all?

I just confirmed that I can record and playback HDTV from my Tehnotrend S2-3200 DVB-Satellite TV Tuner Card with MP TV-Server (1080i, 50 Hz from Satellite Astra Europe).
