The swedish digital-tv-distributor Canal Digital says that they will start pairing their cards to a specific box serial-number, to prevent piracy... I think Viasat already does this..

Will this be the end for satellite-tv using a HTPC as decoder??

I was just about to order a DVB-S-card and a Canal Digital-subscription when i read this..

This is where i read this...

In swedish we use to say like this in these kind of situations: RIKTIGT JÄVLA DÅLIGT

I'm just wondering how that should prevent piracy? Looks more like teasing customers, PayTV providers in Germany did similar in the past. Not sure if they're still that strict.

Result of it was: You can use the smartcard with other receivers/cards, but when ordering a smartcard, you had to have a certified receiver serial number. That was all. As soon as you got that card, you were able to use it in other devices as well. Don't know the current state, tho.

Might be the same for you: As soon as you get the card, you should be able to use it in other receivers/tv cards. But keep in mind that if you do that, you'd violate the contract with your provider. Some say: If they don't know, what could they do? Of course we do not support this idea. ;)

hehe, true ;)

that would be great, but here in sweden the cards will be locked to a specific box-serial-number... the only possibility to move cards will be to another box of the same brand... (sounds really great to prevent piracy ;))

it´s probably just 2-3% of their customers that uses a HTPC ;)

    Hi,
It could be more ppl actually have a HTPC or will in a "few" years, I think it's the same situation like we have in Norway & more & more ppl get a htpc (for dvb-t, dvb-s & dvb-c when it comes around) instead of a "normal" one.

    & I that was planning on a dvb-s equipment this year :p

    Regards

I plan to order a Twinhan 1034 DVB-S to my HTPC, but i want to be sure that there are some channels that i could have any interest in to watch... i don´t just want 1000 channels =)

I choose the twinhan, because i can upgrade it with a CI, the day when there´s a possibility to use DVB-S scrambled channels..

Comhem has pairing on their hdtv channels in sweden as well :/

I've heard stuff about this as well :(

I'm gonna move to an apartment which has Comhem DVB-C is about 2 weeks time, as I understand it the trick is to order a stand alone subscription card without a HDTV STB. Those cards are usually already paired.
