Hi,
I'm looking for advise for moving from XP to Win 7 leaving behind everything except "unwatched movies". This will happen on the same harddrive in the same PC.

I did some search on the forum, but did not find a similar case. If I missed something, please help with the link to other posts. Thanks.

As-is:
  • Windows XP with Mediaportal outdated version and installed/uninstalled plugins/skins etc. In short, lots of dust and debris in Windows and Mediaportal that I want to leave behind.
  • Most movie data accurate, some wrong or incomplete (e.g. missing actors). Same for fan-art and covers.
  • All movies are on network shares, most of them *.iso. Each move has an *.nfo with IMDB id inside and a movie cover *.jpg e.g. 21.iso, 21.nfo, and 21.jpg
  • Most of the movies are watched, but some are unwatched. This is important information!
To-be
  • From scratch Win 7 installation, MediaPortal 1.2.3, newest Moving Pictures
  • Get all movie data, covers, and fan art fresh from the Internet. Movie data in German preferred, wherever available. High data quality more important than German, if in doubt.
  • Set all movies to watched, except those that were unwatched before. Again, this is important.
So my question is how I best prepare the move while the old system is live.
  • What is the best scraper to get German movie data in high quality with English fallback?
  • Do I need to rename movies to ensure that the scraper(s) run automatically on the new installation?
  • How do I transfer the "unwatched" information?
Thanks for your help!

Regards,
Gemini

    • Use the Trakt plugin or http://follw.it/ to sync your current database to an online database so it stores your watched status for movies & series. Do this with your current install first!!
    • Use the IMDb+ Plugin as a scraper
    • When you got everything installed and the new databases have been created, you can use Trakt / follw.it again to sync your watched status again.
If you have .nfo files with the IMDb id then the IMDb+ scraper will read the info from those files and match them with the movies.

    Hi HomeY,
thanks a lot. I fully trusted your advice, and went through the transition over the weekend. Now I'm indeed on a clean install on Win7.

I tried both Trakt and follw.it. Both work for the requirement to save/restore the "wachted/unwatched". However, I like Trakt better because not only does it have a MP plugin that gives me proposals, but also there are apps for iphone/ipad. The later are a nice extra without any additional effort.

Now I have some scraper challenges. IMDb+ is good, but not perfect or I'm to stupid to configure it right. :) And I have some music DVD that are (of course not) on IMDb. Using local information (*.nfo) does not work the way I think it should. I'll open new threads for this.

    Thanks again!

    Regards,
    Gemini

If you want me to go over any issues with IMDb+, then please start a thread over at the IMDb+ forum at: https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/forums/imdb.554/

I've been lazy with updating the wiki to reflect all the new options and what their impact is on eachoter, but as-is with the description explanation within (translated in all supported languages), it should still be possible to understand how it works and how to configure it the way you want. But eventhough IMDb+ supports German as a language there are still some parts that are English-only, such as the title rename system to group movies.

I do have plans to add support for a German rename database system, but it is easier said then done, so you will have to be more patient for that. It is however possible to add all your own entries via the custom method and use German indirectly that way (just means work for you). Also the current German support is based on the info available at imdb.de, which can be sparse on some titles. The IMDb+ scraper will then rely on the imdb.com information and supplement it with English (if you enabled that option, otherwise it shows up 'blank'). I do have plans to expand that with a better German movie site, but did not find the time for that yet.

There is another German scraper-script, whos author was inspired by IMDb+ that might be better suited for you, so look on the forum for FilmInfo+ if you want to try that one.

    No worries.

I browsed the IMDb+ forum only to realize that the issue I see are already being discussed:

On MP I use German as preferred with English as back-up. This results in shortend "..." English descriptions, if German is not available. :(

I found your reply to this. I could switch English preferred, but not all family members would appreciate. ;)

If I come across something "new" I'll post to the other forum. And I'll have a look at FilmInfo+.

    Thanks

Yes, IMDb+ has pro/cons, just like FilmInfo+ has its pro/cons in comparison.

Since you reminded me again on the issue, later this week/weekend I'll try to look again into adding support for a better German movie info site to IMDb+, which will at least overcome the lack of German descriptions at the IMDb.de website.
