Codec/Player Recommendations (1 Viewer)

Just started using MP in the last few days. Figured out how to use Moving Pictures for my saved dixv/xvid/mkv movies. Scrolls from movie to movie great, artwork and all. However, when I select one to play, it takes a long time to start up. Leads me to think I need to configure it to a different player/codec. Was using XBMC, player worked great, but everything else struggled. Little overwhelmed by all the different options. Suggestions for the following setup.....

System:
P4 2.8ghz
1024 DDR
GeForce 8400 video Card.

Also, Can Moving Pictures be used for downloaded TV shows as well?
