Probably a newbie question so please bear with me. I do not have a capture card yet, but thought I would look at the music, video and picture capabilities of MediaPortal.

I installed the 0.2.0.0 version. I then ran the configuration program. Everything seems to be fine and then I get to the Finish button. The app closes so I figure that I am done with configuration and double click on the MediaPortal icon on my desktop. This runs the configuration part again, but none of the options I picked for folder locations, etc. are there. I do this again and finish, only to find out that once again nothing is saved.

What am I doing wrong? I had the impression that capturing video is not a necessity to use MediaPortal. I believe I meet all of the min system and software requirements. I have DirectX 9.0c. I have XP SP2. I have .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 installed. I have two security updates for .NET 2.0 installed. What am I missing. Do I need to install 0.2.1.0?

Thanks,

Never mind. I am not a newbie, I am an idiot :sorry:

I had an old version of MediaPortal. Once I uninstalled that and installed the 0.2.0.0 it worked fine.

You are correct that you don't require a TV tuner.
after you install mediaportal and run the main program the first time it will run a config wizard, that is normal and I don't know if it would use saved settings.

if your settings will not save, make sure you are running as an administrator. also make sure the files in the mediaportal folder are not read-only (not sure how they would get that way)

Well, not to retract my self-admitted idiocy, but there does appear to be a problem.

I run the configuration step and add my movie and music folders. I then exit that app (or view if it is the same app but a different dialog view). I then re-run it to check my folder settings and BAM! the are gone.

I have also updated to 0.2.0.4 and still get the same problem. Has anyone else experienced this?

I am running as the administrator. However, when I checked the folder that the program was installed in I found that a lot of the files are marked read-only. I changed them all to be read/write. I then added my video folder and exited. I re-ran the configuration program and it is gone again. The date/time stamp on the DB3 file in the databases folder reflects the time I made my change to add my video folder.

Any other ideas?

    Hi,

Are you starting MediaPortal setup via the shortcut on the Desktop? If you do, try browsing to C:\Program Files\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\ and directly start Configuration.exe there. Next, perform configuration and restart it from there to make sure the changes are kept. If they are then you can try to run MediaPortal.exe from that directory.

If things turn out to work like this then somehow MP uses the wrong current working directory when MediaPortal setup is run. It could be something with the shortcuts, but it's hard to determine what's going on like this.

    Kind regards,
    Michel

I gave that a try and it still does not save the data. I took a look at the files in the database folder. The date/time on the RadioDatabase4.db3 and TVDatabaseV21.db3 files get changed, but the FolderDatabase3.db3 file does not get changed. I looked at the data in the file with a binary viewer and it appears to be the one that holds the path info. Since it is not getting changed I am guessing that is the problem.

Since the database files are SQL files, do I need to install SQL or MySQL on my machine? I already had a version of MySQL running for another app. Could that be the problem?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,

All configuration settings (including paths to music/videos etc.) are stored in the file mediaportal.xml. The database files are SQLite database files - SQLite is the database engine MP is using).

Maybe something is wrong with your mediaportal.xml. Try deleting it; setup should recreate the file then. If things are still not working out then, attach the mediaportal.log (should be created in the log subdirectory). Make sure you copy this log right after you've closed setup, because any subsequent restart of setup or MP will rename this file to .bak (overwriting the old one).

    Kind regards,
    Michel

Ok, I did what you suggested about deleting the XML file and running the configuration again. It still fails to write out any of the sections in the XML file for my Video file path.

I have attached the LOG file. Unfortunately it doesn't tell you much because I ran the configuration to add the Video folder about 5 minutes after the initial config and as you can see from the timestamps in the LOG file nothing new was written out and the timestamp doesn't jump by 5 minutes.

    Any other ideas?

BTW, I am able to manually edit the XML file in Notepad and add in the path to my videos. Then when I run MediaPortal I can see that location. However, I still cannot use the configuration tool to set my folder paths.
