Completely new to this, and I have spent a while searching around including reading many guides, but I can't get past the first step on many.

I've installed media portal server, and at the end of the install it brought up the "setup database connection", but it just fails, and when I open TV-server configuration I get the same database setup box.

I get the impression from the guides I've read that this should just work?

Anyway, my settings are.

Hostname: Server-PC
Dependency: MySQL5
Schema name: MpTvDb

User ID: Root
Password left as MediaPortal

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers[DOUBLEPOST=1379188505][/DOUBLEPOST]I'm using Zonealarm free firewall, and have trried putting that on pause to no avail.

Both the host name and dependancy boxes turn red with the error message.

Apologies for missing the specs and logs.

Spec on the server is

SERVER-PC
Win7 64bit
I3 3220
12GB Ram
P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3
4350 gpu
ocz vertex 2 ssd
4x wd green 3tb HDs
Hauppauge nova-s2 card

PC-PC
Win 7 64bit
8GB ram
I5 3570k
P8Z77-M Pro
7950
840 pro ssd

Had another go at this. Managed to get the server config up and channels setup after reinstalling 1.4. Noticed there was an update so both systems to 1.5. Funnily enough when I updated the client to 1.5 and the server was on 1.4. It nearly worked, I saw picture from the server tv card on the client, but it was buggy, and kept dropping the connection or crashing taking 30 seconds or more to come back to responsiveness.

Updated the client to 1.5, set the name as it reads in windows explorer (SERVER-PC) click on test connection and I get unable to connect to host, but if I click on it say 2 or 3 more times it will go green and connect. Go to save the settings and I get there is a problem with the hostname do you want to review?

So I run it in debug mode to get the log files as per the FAQ, but as it won't save the server name it can't even try to connect to make a log?

Cheers.

    Hello and welcome chug :)

I recommend you completely disable all firewalls (don't forget the Windows firewall) on both the client and server while troubleshooting.
I also recommend if you're new to MediaPortal that you try a "single-seat" configuration on the server first if at all possible, and then extend it to include client(s) once it is running nicely.

How are the client and server connected - wireless or wired links?
