Hey guys, i'm considering getting a DVB-S card to go along side my DVB-T card so that i can record, pause, watch etc my digital satellite feed (which includes subscription to sky's premium channels including sky sports, sky movies etc).

The Card in question which i am considering currently to do the job is 'Pinnacle PCTV Sat CI - PCI DVB-S' http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=54275 I looked on the Pinnacle site to see in more detail what it can do and not real sign of what or how it works really so i have emailed their support asking general questions about it but what i wondered from you guys is

a.) have you ever heard of this card - is it any good?

b.) if so does it work with mp?

c.) would you suggest any other card which would allow me to record the encoded stream? using my sky card which goes in my digi box atm i guess?

Once again thanks

Moj :p

P.S. Just found what i believe to be the same kind of card?? http://www.woden.com/html/pc_sat_cards.html Half the price of the pinnacle one? what you guys reckon?

    Hi there

I used some time last year finding a DVB-S card suitable for MP.

I ended up with a Technisat Skystar 1 CI, but soon learned that this card is actually just a clone of a TwinhanDTV Sat-CI card.

The bad thing about this is that it is the only Skystar card which havn't got hardware decoding.

But the good thing is that by using the Twinhan BDA drivers you can actually get it to work on MP.

So I bought that card along with a Conax CAM module, and my Canal Digital card works perfectly.

Some channels lacked sound, and I can't figure out why.

And my HTPC box is to slow, so the image and the recorded shows isn't that nice.

So currently I am trying to work out what hardware components needs to be improved.

But I think the key here is to ensure that the DVB-S card you choose have some kind of BDA drivers available. Also hardware MPEG-2 decoding is nice but hard to come by and/or expensive.

    a) I'm sure it's a good card with it's own application
    b) No it won't as it does not have BDA drivers
    c) The other linked card is a Twinhan which works very well in MP - unfortunately that does not work with decoding Sky's streams. Basically Sky do not release a CAM for their encryption method (hopefully the EU will keep harrassing them) so the only CAM which works is the Dragon CAM. The Dragon CAM has only been reported working well with the FireDTV or FloppyDTV devices which of course are supported with MediaPortal.

Note: You can get internal - external firewire connectors to save routing it through an open slot to the back firewire port.
