Hi,

I just wondered if this was already possible or would it be the sort of thing that could be developed. I remember speak to a friend a while back that was able to control a program on their computer via SMS. I wonder if this would be possible with MP, as it would be great to be able to signup to a SMS gateway and then simple txt a number saying for example 'RECORD 101' and it would automatically start recording that channel.

I've had a search through the forum but not been able to find anything, or anything else on the web.

Anyway just wanted to see what people thought about this.

In order to do that the PC would need to be able to receive that SMS, which means that it needs to have a connection to a Cell phone, which passes the content of the SMS somehow (serial, USB, etc.) to the PC.

    Or do i misunderstand you?

    Yes you did misunderstand.
Only thing you need is internet connection (and sms gateway).
When you send text message that messages comes to your htpc through internet.
You for example send message RECORD 101 to some shortnumber (i.e 173172).
Message goes to sms gateway which post that message to your computer and sends all parameters also. (For example record=101). Your application read that record=101 and then MediaPortal will record that channel.
    Very simple.

Ive heard of sms gateways working the other way (sending emails to phones) but never this way. Can you post a link? as i would really like to learn more about it.

I don't know about sms gateways, but there is an application called Float Mobile Agent for Sony Ericsson phones (other brands were being added) that could be controlled with scripting.

If the plugin could recieve the message, I don't see why it can't be done.
However, it would require a large set of keywords to control MP properly. There would probably be problems with programmes where names would have to be passed exactly.

Exactly same way i told before.

But here is one document which tell you all about two way messaging with sms.

Thanks for eveyones help, found out that MP webinterface does everything I wanted and more. That's what I love about MP you think you've found out everything that it can do and then you get surprised.
