    Hi Guys,

I currently use Freemake video convertor on my two Zbox clients to convert from .ts files to .MP4 as I get the benefit of CUDA.

I have been playing around the past few days to try and get the best settings which are a compromise between visual quality and file size. I don't seem to be making good progress.

I am managing to convert files easily enough, but the resulting .mp4 file is larger than the original .ts file. I suspect I am not shifting the bitrate low enough - it is currently set to "original".

Can anyone suggest some settings for me to use so I can get a 2Gb file down to around 800K without too much loss of picture quality?

    Thank you.

    M.

When you are in the MP4 convert panel you can select preset output from 1080 to Mobile, see picture.

    Hi foxbenw

Cuda works for me two ways, using cuvid in that Lav video filters, everything is sharper\brighter looking than with M$ or PDVD codecs.

Regarding encoding, which I only do on DVD\BluRay rips, my X2 4200+ pretty much runs at 1 to 1 doing this, ie 1hr long movie takes 1hr to encode, with cuda that goes down to 20 minutes, so a big difference.

One thing i have notice though, is the later nvidia drivers use cuda faster, pity they are not so reliable for me :(

Just to add to Ray's comments, I'm doing the coding conversion on my Zbox ID41's and a .ts stream (film) of 2 hours is taking just under 2 hours to code to .mp4.

This then begs the question, should I replace the ATI HD5550 in my main HTPC and put an nVidia card in there... certainly it would overcome the CCC driver issues

ray - I have a play around with the settings and have come to a good compromise. I use a custom .mp4 setting with the frame size as original, frame rate set as either 25fps or 50 fps (depending if it is a HD or SD conversion) and I set the bit rate to a custom 1024. I also set audio to AC3 with a sample rate of 44.1khz and a bit rate of 128. This gets a .ts file from around 2,737Kb to 939Kb and the quality is fine, and speed of conversion is decent too.

I was really just asking to see how much it was about file size and how much about conversion speed, and whether .ts files were bad for any reason.

I use videoredo for my ts files. that is to remove the adverts. but removing adverts is also quite an effective way of cutting file size too! That's all i was getting at really. it remuxes rather than reencodes so takes seconds rather than minutes/hours. Removing adverts and then remuxing to mkv can take a good third off the file size. that is enough for me so i don't do anything else with my ts files. i just wanted to point it out in case it hadn't been considered. also i am not sure that handbrake/freemake can retain the dvb subs? of course that may not be important.

as for a quality/bitrate setting, from past tinkering the kind of reduction you are after would be achieved by h264 video at about 1100 kbps. this is actually very similar to the handbrake ipad setting. maybe you could try that for one of your files too?
from memory the freemake ipad setting retains a similar quality and comes out with quite a big file. Anyway, try h264 at 1100.
