Yet another silly newbie question:

Is CoreAvc necessary? I do not want to spend $12.95. Are there alternatives or is this the most reliable source for this?

I am just going by what the manual states is necessary. I know that sometimes manuals for open source projects sometimes get outdated so I just want to make sure this is still a current requirement and that the link provided, CoreAVC 2.0 (for Windows) | CoreCodec, is still the preferred source, and that it is best, (especially for a newbie) to just go ahead and pay the $12.95.

Personally use shark007's codec pack (supports XP\Vista\Win7 32\64 bit versions), easy selection for the various main codecs for windows itself to use and of course MP, you can then chose which h.264 codec to use, but the MPC video codec gives good results and does use dxva, have had a few codec related crashes with ffdshow dxva version, but that may not apply to you.

SAF (hoborgs) pack has pretty much the same but needs to be unlocked to access all codecs, above does not.

I personally get the best results when using CoreAVC to decode HD TV and mkv files. For the US$9 it costs for a licence (at the moment), it's well worth it.
I don't like the SAF pack personally (just my own experience) and prefer either the Sharky codec pack with CoreAVC, or individual codecs with CoreAVC.
