got a All in Wonder 8500DV and i'm becoming increasingly annoyed by ATI's tuner software (I mean come on... 8pm on saturday and 8pm on tuesday are TOTALLY DIFFERENT, yet it says there's a conflict)

anyway, ran across MediaPortal here and had a question. Is there a free Directshow mpeg encoder anywhere that'll work with MediaPortal? I'd like to dump ATI's software for MediaPortal but don't have the money to spend on an encoder.

Also: if such a free encoder exists, would a Athlon XP 2100+ be enough? (it's enough for the ati software but that won't mean much)

If the ATI's software is installed you will have there codec installed, also MP comes with 2 codecs anyway.

Put it this way, you will not break your existing system if you do install MP 0.2.3.0 or previous version 0.2.2.0

If this is a software encoding card you may run into trouble with the XP2100, but if you do not try you will not know.

    Regards

Yes, it's a software encoding card. As to the processor, it captures fine with my current settings (mpeg-2 640x480, around 4mbits/sec) at around 60% cpu.

Heck, it even captured mostly fine with a duron 1600 in there. Albeit at around 80-90% cpu, had to be careful not to VNC in to the box while it was capturing or it would drop frames.

Thanks for the info, i'll give it a whirl tomorrow.

There goes that idea... mediaportal didn't see the tuner at all
edit: clairifcation, it saw that the tuner existed but that's it, wouldn't do anything with it at all.

2.4GHz P4 is recommended for software encoding cards.

but generaly speaking, dump that card, and spend some money on a decent hw encoding card like Hauppauge's PVR models.
no hassle with high CPU load, setup, encoder software, bad picture ect.

    just fun :)

Doesn't matter anyway, mediaportal refuses to have anything to do with the card. It sees it's there but doesn't do anything with it. Given my $0 budget i'm sorta stuck with ati's lowsy software still...
