Would it be possible (and/or desirable) to use this plugin in conjuction with WinLIRC to allow use of serial IR detectors? A remote + serial detector/blaster came free with the Technisat card, so I was hoping to be able to use it to control MP, and to send related controls to an external surround-sound amp.

    Hey there,

I got your private message and have replied to that, but for the benefit of others that are reading this ...

I'm planning to include WinLirc support in my new plugin/app suite. This should let you do what you're talking about.

It's currently in testing, so I'll post something when it's available for public scrutiny.

    Cheers,

I understand that this plugin allows you to control external devices from MCE, so you can set the TV to the AV channel, switch the sound amp, start the VCR etc. at a stroke. But (in its current state) do the remotes for these external devices all have to be MCE Remote compatible? If this is the case, it's a pretty good argument for interfacing with WinLirc which can read and send almost anything. And if you're keen, you can make home-brew Rx-Tx hardware.

The MCE Replacement Plugin only supports MCE compatible IR devices, but the new software I'm working on (IR Server Suite) has a plugin architecture to support many different IR devices.

At present it supports (to some degree, some experimental, some fully):
MCE (with either original or replacement driver)
    DViCO Fusion Remote
    IgorPlug
    IRMan
    IRTrans
    USB-UIRT
    X-10
    XBCDRC

It also supports Windows Messages, so anything like HIP or Girder can pass on button presses for remotes that the suite doesn't support (and this is also true of the MCE Replacement Plugin, it too supports windows messages).

I'm working on adding WinLirc support right now, so if I get something going I'll drop you a private message and perhaps you can try it out for me?

When you jump in and do a project like what I'm doing at the moment, you soon realise that a lot of it is re-inventing the wheel. If I was writing MediaPortal from scratch I would not support any remote controls natively. I would support Girder and HIP and programs like that, basically I would "out-source" remote control support to well established, specialized software. And I would make it so that MediaPortal could interface with those programs 100%. This would (to borrow a term you used before) create a remote abstraction layer. MediaPortal wouldn't care what remote you were using.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted on the WinLirc front.

    Cheers,

Any news about winlirc plugin? I have Logitech Harmony 555 remote, and simple ir receiver, which works fine with Girder 3.2 with IgorPlug. Current winlirc plugin is more comfortable, but it is buggy and all functions not work in the new SVN (numbers in fullscreen TV). Will be possible to send command to MP, which isn't on the top on second monitor?

The winlirc support in IR Server Suite should be up to the job now if you'd like to give it a try?

    Cheers,
