    Hi,

I'm still watching analog tv with a cable connection and using an analog PVR350 card in my HTPC to record.
Can anyone enlighten me regarding this issue?

If I would switch to one of the digital tv providers (Belgacom or Telenet) I have to use the decoder that comes with their package, right?
Is there a way to record the digital signal with MP or does my system become obsolete at that point if I would cancel the analog cable subscription?

I'm a noob in this domain, so please bare with me.

Thanks a lot in advance for reading this/shedding light in my darkness. ;)

    Hi Peter,

sadly I cannot provide real answers to your questions, I can only make the confusion bigger :p

Belgacom TV is IPTV. I do not know if there is a way to watch this on a PC. You might be stuck to your decoderd only.

Telenet is DVB-C. So in theory you should be able to buy a DVB-C card like the Digital-Anywhere FireDTV or FloppyDTV. Then you would need a CAM module, this depends on what kind of encryption is used by Telenet (Aston Mediaguard is fairly often what you need, but you need to check). Then finally in this CAM module you need to insert the chip-card from Telenet. Now I've heard rumours that Telenet is not using standard DVB-C, and so it might not work out. I cannot give you more information, but you know where to start looking.

An alternative, which I know works, is to set up a satellite dish and get TV Vlaanderen. This is standard DVB-S technology, but again I don't have more information.

Best way to go with digital TV in Belgium using a DVB solution on the PC is to go with DVB-S, so TV Vlaanderen: www.tv-vlaanderen.be

TVV use an open system that works with standard CAMs, contrary to Telenet (which is a totally closed system).

I found this information regarding BGC digital tv: List of IP addresses @ Belgacom TV (Belgium)
Would that be an option to use seamless with MP?

I could be wrong but I think that I read somewhere that it does not work anymore.

The only option in Belgium to watch digital TV using a PC is TVVlaanderen. Belgacom & Telenet both have a closed system that won't let you use a TV card with CAM module.

Don't know about Belgacom TV (I don't have a regular phone line at home, so I did not investigate that option).
If you have succeeded in doing Belgacom TV - MP, I'm keen to know all about it.

I can confirm that TV Vlaanderen works 100% with MediaPortal.

I would adivse not to use Telenet in combination with a DVB-C card, because Telenet uses a propriatary approach to decoding. I've discussed this with a provider of hotel TV distribution systems, and doing it with MP would be a big challenge.

Unless Belgacom and Telenet start to allow non propriatary decoders, I would advise not to go down that road.
Based on that information, I'm now using TV-vlaanderen solution, and it works great.

    Best regards,
    Berns
