If you can make your remote software send windows messages then you could use the Message Plugin to control MediaPortal.  This should do what you want.

You can find the Message Plugin in the site plugin download section, if you have any trouble let me know.  I haven't updated the plugin for while, so I'm not 100% sure it still works with recent versions of MediaPortal.
