I am running Media Portal 1.0.2 and I did get DirectVobSub to work in the past, but after I formatted I can't get it to work. I added the DirectVobSub (Auto-loading version) to the external filters section in the MP config but still no love.

I'll appreciate any suggestions, thanks!

    No need to add it!
Just DL and register (or install) VobSub.

PS: In 1.1 there MP is using MPC-HE's sub engine and there is no need to DL anything. It even keeps DXVA working ;)

So what's the difference between VobSub and DirectVobSub? I figured that VSFilter = DirectVobSub = VobSub. And why is it that I got DirectVobSub to work with MP in the past, but not now?

I'm not sure if this is so great because MPC-HC doesn't play my subtitles anyway. :/ I generally need to install DirectVobSub and manually add it as an external filter and then it works... So now I'm just trying to get MP to do the same thing with its Post Processing section.

If you install or register it, and select it to be used in config, it should work automatically
I tried VobSub but it didn't work. Installing DirectVobSub registers it (vsfilter.dll) automatically and then I just have to add to MPC-HC's config. Then it works.

if filename (-ext) for movie and subs is same.
The files I am playing back have embedded subs.

Alt. you can just use FFDShow (mark subs in FFDShow).
Thanks, this is a handy tip! If I uninstall DirectVobSub and select the "Subtitles" option in FFDShow's Video config then I have exactly the same subtitles. I like reducing the amount of codecs to a bare minimum. But now what bothers me is, since I am using FFDShow in Media Portal for H.264 decoding, I should be seeing the subs in Media Portal, but I don't! Grrr. In my opinion this is part of where the problem lies.

What kind of subs won't play with MPC-HC?
I have no idea what kind of subs they are. They are embedded in the MKV files (Anime) and they look pretty :)

Btw, there is also a patch for 1.0.2 you copuld try
Thanks I'll give it a try.

Note: Does the fact that I'm running Windows 7 make any difference? :/

    EDIT:

Okay I solved the problem. Occam's razor. I never saw the "Subtitle / Audio" tab under Video config where you have to explicitly select "Show subtitles" otherwise MP blocks it somehow. Haha! Thanks for the help though! I definitely like knowing about the ffdshow sub option and I probably wouldn't have seen this tab if it wasn't for your link to the manual.

    Cheers.
